Free Music Notes for No AngelFree Music Review: Can you fault it? Of course you can't! Hit: 5 Stars
This is a simply wonderful album, certainly the best of 2001, possibly for many many years. The whole album has an understated tone to the music, and it's mellow, easy to listen to, and beautiful. Unusually this album has no dud tracks. Most albums have a least one that isn't so good, that you don't quite like as much, but with this album, every single song is of a very high quality, and cannot be faulted. There are different styles and tones to some of the songs, from Don't Think of Me to My Lover's Gone to Isobel and Hunter. But each one is beautifully unique, and a superb song. My personal favourite is probably Isobel, which i love for it's somewhat slow and brooding tone, with it's poetic but hard-hitting lyrics. It's more like a story, sung, than a poem sung, which is what most songs are. It's a tune you can't get out of your head, with the deep tune going in wonderful contrast with her voice. Another real winner is Hunter, a slightly more up-beat and "poppy" tune, but one with with haunting lyrics and great music. My Lover's Gone is a slightly lower-key song, more...mystical, with slightly sad undertones. If songs could be placed as locations, this one would be a lonely English moor in early morning, with the mist drawing away over the landscape and the dew covering the grass, with spider's webs sparkling in the bushes like strands of spun glass, with a person staring off to the ocean in the distance, past the hills. There is little left to say about this album. It is a great one, which everyone should love. the lyrics are beautiful, the music is beautiful. And Dido's voice, contrary to the belief imposed by the name of the album, IS that of an angel. Buy it.
Free Music Review: Great record by Dido Hit: 5 Stars
Even if she's reminicent of Sinéad O'Connor and Sarah McLachlan, British-born singer/songwriter Dido (die-dough) stands in a class all her own. After stealing her first recorder, Dido quickly tuned in and adapted to music. Most of her teenage years were spent touring with her brother and his band Faithless, whose albums contain some of Dido's earlier work. After relentless touring with the band, Dido quickly learned and crafted her voice. She also began to make demos of her own songs and music. Arista founder Clive Davis heard some of these demos and had Dido signed to the label. The album contains many songs which have the shot of bringing Dido more success. Much of the album is about love with songs like "Here With Me," "My Lover's Gone," "All You Want," and of course the Alanis Morissette-like "Don't Think of Me." Dido proves she's no sappy girl in love with songs like "Honestly Ok," the bluesy/jazz rhythm "My Life," "Isobel," which repeatedly questions/justifies abortion or so it implies, and the Beth Orton-like "I'm No Angel." The album's bonus track, "Take My Hand," is a refreshing and great end to a great debut album. Much of the credit goes to Dido's amazing writing capability and voice, not to mention musical training. Don't forget brother/producer Rollo, who helped produce and spice up the album with a large amount of techno and dance beats. This album should be #1 on the list of albums you need to listen to before you die. Buy this album, it's worth every penny.
Free Music Review: GOTTA HAVE IT!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
the woman with a happy face but a sad voice. you gotta have this cd. the only reason why i bought this cd was to hear the song here with me and thank you. but after listening to it the whole way through, it blows your mind. Here with me-great song. the beat starts off slow then BAM!!! hits you hard with bass and excellent vocals. Hunter-is more uptempo. great great great track. Don't think of me-is another great song. as the song ends, it sounds like the beat speeds up. the bass line changes as it gets closer to the end. its just well done. my lover's gone-this is probably the most depressing song on the cd. i would just skip this track, kidding. its a great love song...in a way. All you want-good song. Thank You-excellent song. the 1st verse if you don't know is the chorus to eminem's song stan. the song is so well done. it leaves you wanting more. Honestly Ok-is honestly ok. good track but not the best. Slide-this is an eerie song. she scares me on this track. Isobel-after listening to this song you wonder, "Who in the hell is Isobel? Why has she done this?" this and the last track are stand out tracks. it has this reggae type beat to it with a lot of bass. I'm no angel-the perfect song to play in a car that has a good sound system. the bass on this track is so so good. the vocals are even better. My life-this song will probably make you cry because its so great and so sad. Take my hand-the last track and a clubbed track. who knew a club song could be sad, but somehow they made it. its long, which makes this song a standout track.
Free Music Review: "Top Of The Heap" Hit: 5 Stars
Like many I first heard Dido on the beginning credits of "Roswell", singing "Here With Me". From that moment I simply had to hear more from this new singer I had never heard of before. The vocals on "Here With Me" were beautiful, and the way the music builds to the end is an emotional high. The next time I heard one of her songs was on the radio. The next thing I did was go and buy her cd, I have not been disappointed. It has fast become one of my "can't live without" cds. Her style is smooth, soft pop to slightly folky blues. She has been compared to Sarah McLauchlan vocally, but I would have to say she is kind of a cross between Sara and Sinead O'Connor. No mistaking though, she has her own individual style. The songs very a little on the disc, from sleepy slow to bounce around. There are some upbeat tunes with a driving beat, like: "Take My Hand". And slower tunes like "My Lover's Gone". It's an incredibly soft song with the sound of gulls and waves, you can almost picture yourself in a beach house with the smell of the ocean. My personal favorite is "Thankyou". She sings about a bad day where everything goes wrong, but all she needs is to look at her love's picture or see him smile, and suddenly she must thank him for the best day of her life. In my opinion Dido is a very talented singer, with one of the best debut albums out there. Jump on the bandwagon and become one of her fans that was "there from the beginning"!!
Free Music Review: Addictive; you just can't get enough of it Hit: 5 Stars
Dido's music has a way of sneaking up on you. I've been watching Roswell since the series premiered, and only recently did I feel the need to find out who it was that sang "Here with me." When I received the cd from Amazon, I listened to it in my office at work. Since I keep the office door open, I couldn't play it too loudly, because I did not want to disrupt my colleagues (what can I say, I'm a nice guy). "Here with me" is the first cut on the album, and it didn't really impress me. I listened to the rest of the album, and still wasn't impressed. However, as I listened to the cd a second time when I got home, I was liking it a whole lot better. And the thing is, it gets better every time I listen to it. Dido's voice is natural and yet full of emotion. She never gets unnaturally loud. And the backing instrumentation is very professional, with a driving rhythm that doesn't get boring. The only other female singer I am familiar with who sings so naturally and emotionally is Sade Adu. Tracey Thorn of Everything but the Girl comes in a close second (Dido and Sade hit me closer to the heart). I can and do listen to "No Angel" several times a day now. This album is simply awesome. All of the songs are better than good, and they are not all cut from the same cookie cutter mold. Dido, like Sade, infuses her songs with a beauty that's timeless and emotions that will never fail to touch your soul. That is, assuming that you have one and that you are in touch with it :)
