Free Music Notes for No Angel

Free Music Review: an artist who will be around for a while
Hit: 5 Stars

this is an excellent album. i bought the cd after i first heard "here with me" way back in 1999. i thought it was a very clever song , and that dido had one of the most unique voices i have heard. buying this album, was a right desicion. "here with me" is a very good radio song, but it is one that,i have never, i mean never have gotten bored of. it really is that good. hunter, is another great song. as well as "don't think of me" , "all you want", "thank you" which is another of one of "our songs" between my boyfriend and I. other good tracks are "i'm no angel" and i really , really like the track "take my hand" which is a really cool, dance number. the thing to note about dido's music, is that everything from dido's voice, the lyrics and the production are awesome. i want to say that this album is more of a pop-rock chillout album. hmm... a new music category? (lol) i think a lot of people can relate to dido's music, because it gets personal. you can really relate to what she is singing, which is rare. i have to say that this is one of my favorite albums that i have ever owned. it came out in 1999 and here it is 2004 and i am still playing it more than most of my other 300 or so cd's..... the only exception... her second cd, which sounds just as good as this one!!!!!

a "real must buy"

Free Music Review: Angel's Voice
Hit: 5 Stars

I would call Dido and her album "No Angel" the best discovery of 2000. When I first heard "Here With Me" on the radio it blew my mind away. What a beautiful voice! It reminded me Sarah McLachlan but with a charming softness in it (don't get me wrong, I love Sarah!). And the song was great. But I couldn't catch the singer's name for a week so I struggled trying to find it on a radio but with no luck. I even thought it was Tara MacLean. So I went to her concert and realized it wasn't her song that I was looking for. But I liked her stuff too and bought her album. And when I was checking it out on amazon.com I looked up at the section "customers also bought" and that's where I found Dido. "No Angel" has this magic vibe that keeps you up through the whole record. It's not a party music. It makes you think but without being too sophisticated. Dido's beautiful voice gently melts in it. The selection of songs is great and ALL! of then are written by her. There is not a single song on this record that I liked less than the others but there are favorites too: "Here With Me", "Thankyou","My Lover's Gone", "No Angel"...( If I don't stop I will name all the songs :o). I strongly recommend this album to people who like good (good quality) music. This is a masterpiece! No doubt 5 stars!!!

Free Music Review: Outstanding
Hit: 5 Stars

When I was first introduced to Dido, the person who put the cd in the player handed me the lyrics and I started reading. "This is depressing" came to mind while I was reading the words, "she's got issues" was what I was thinking. "My lovers gone, his boots no longer by my door" and other lines at first gave me the wrong impression of this album.

Yes, there are some depressing type songs, and some pain here, too. She sings of her ex lover, leaving her for some other women, "I hear she spreads her sweet honey" and that in fact she was with your best friend last night, hah!...Actually it's a fun song and catchy too.

But the two best songs, in my opinion, are wonderful love songs, those two being the "Thank you" track and the final track "Take my Hand". One of these has been played like crazy on the radio, but I don't recall if I have heard the final track on the air. It is truly a lovely and beautiful song and I think the best song on the entire album.

I once started playing this in my mom's garage and when she and her best friend came outside, they couldn't help but ask "who is that woman?", her voice is so noticeable; it's strong and powerful yet also soft and sexy at the same time.

I strongly recommend this cd, it doesn't have any "skip over" songs, it's sad and happy both and really easy to listen to over and over.

Free Music Review: A Great Return to Music!
Hit: 5 Stars

This album and this singer is a giant pull on the steering-wheel back to Music! There are still so many bands and songwriters who want their one minute of fame, writing and playing for effect, hardly considering Music at all. I can hear in Dido her voice, that what she sings, she has lived! Now to me, combined with an excellent five-star producer, and exquisite songwriter, THAT'S MUSIC!

I adore the structure of the opening song, contained in an everlasting crescendo, reminding me of Tears For Fears' Woman in Chains. It's used rarely, but it's highly effective and oh-so-beautiful!!! It has at least the same intensity as Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack (a song giving me goosebumps down my spine, even pulling me over by the side of the road might I hear it in a bar)! Every song and soundclip I heard was written by and for the heart, which makes it so great! Just an hour ago, I didn't know Dido, but now I will rush to the store and buy the album!

Dido, might you ever read this, writing to you from the heart as the songwriter/composer/musician I am, and as a new-born fan, please never be tempted to write just for money and commerce, but always from the heart like you do now! From the bottom of my heart I wish to thank you for translating your life and emotions into music and letting us share them! Thank you!!! Bless you!!!

Free Music Review: Becoming cliché, but still stunning
Hit: 5 Stars

The Guardian (a major UK newspaper) recently published an article branding owners of this album as clichéd 'trendy' people.. middle class, mid thirties, trying to stay hip, etc. Why? Probably because this was the biggest selling UK album last year. But even though it's clichéd, it's still a stunning debut.

The songs are fully developed and elegantly penned. From the straight-forward "I'm No Angel" and trip-hoppy "Here With Me" to the dizzyingly beautiful "Hunter," the songs give a 'serious music' impression, but remain easy to get in to. This album is extremely accessible.

A lot of people hype up Dido's vocals. Truth is, she's nothing amazing, it's her songwriting and production values that really shine. She has a pleasant voice, but it doesn't stand out from the crowd.. but who cares? The songs do.

For the guys out there, Dido is also an extremely good looking young woman, so she covers the eye-candy bases too meaning it's not too embarassing to admit you have her album.

Musically, she covers the bases set by Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette and Sade, without sounding much like any of them. In conclusion, this isn't an innovative album, nor is it exciting, but the songs are excellent, the vocals are sound, and the instrumentation is interesting. What more can you ask for?
