Free Music Review: Still spinning after all this time
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been living with this album for a year and a half and it still gets consistent play in my cd player. Every song evokes a mood and there is a strong unity throughout without it sounding like one big song. From the lush and hypnotic Here With Me (which, like a great scene of a movie, casts fragile human emotions against a backdrop of cinematic beauty) to the quiet, simple songs like Thankyou to the almost "dancey" euphoria of Take My Hand Dido grabs you and takes you on a ride. Whether you think the lyrics are "cheesy" or not probably depends on how cynical a person you are. Dido has a way of cutting thru all the layers and layers of metaphor that many artists hide behind and getting right to the truth of the emotion. Dido will be the first to admit that the lyrics for songs like Thankyou are a bit cheesy (and has done in concert) but it's the sincere delivery that makes it work. You believe without a doubt that she truly felt those emotions and wasn't just trying to make a frothy bit of fluff. In any case, I've never felt the lyrics to be trite and in many cases like with Here With Me, My Life, Isobel and Slide they are highly emotive without a hint of falseness. Be sure to check out her haunting Christmas song, Christmas Day from the Christmas Songs: The Nettwerk Christmas CD.

well, i've been searching cd stores within 100kms of my home and haven't found this cd but then my sister thought to check amazon and while so excited to order this cd for myself and my sister i decided to check the reveiws seen there were SO many! obviously this is an excellent cd and i can't wait to get it... when i first hear "thank you" i thought it sounded like something out of a type of movie like sliding doors...i actually didn't figure out it was in the movie until a week or two later... but still didn't know the band but before i heaard "thank you" i heard "here with me" except i had no idea of the song title or band 'cause i heard a beaautiful song on the final episode of roswell and thought i'd have to look it up on napster [napster wsas a great help, definately a musthave download for music fanatics/and no i am not trying to advertise napster] so i tried every combination of words i could try for the song "here with me" until i found the right title and i had over 100 files i could choose form to download it...i do ont regret downloading any of dido's songs and can't wait till i have the actual cd... Dido's songs are magic...literally... they put you in a trance...Dido has such a way with her singing... you must get this cd if you haven't already!

Free Music Review: Dido soars with 'No Angel.'
Hit: 5 Stars

Let me join in the chorus of five-star reviews to praise this perfect pop album. Dido (whose full name is Dido Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O'Malley Armstrong) first caught my attention when I heard her song "Thank You" on the Sliding Doors soundtrack (which Eminem sampled in his UK number-one single "Stan"). However, her breakthrough occurred a year later with the release of No Angel, which has since sold twelve million copies worldwide. My interest in Dido soared. The album features two singles, "Thank You" (perhaps the greatest break-up of all time) and "Here With Me," amidst a setlist of equally infectious, melancholic at times, trip-hop songs. Dido's third, long-awaited album is currently in production and is due later this year (September 23, 2008). The complete No Angel setlist of sure-to-get-stuck-in-your-head-songs includes:

1. Here With Me 4:15
2. Hunter 3:57
3. Don't Think Of Me 4:32
4. My Lover's Gone 4:27
5. All You Want 3:53
6. Thank You 3:37
7. Honestly Ok 4:37
8. Slide 4:52
9. Isobel 3:54
10. I'm No Angel 3:55
11. My Life 2:59
12. Take My Hand 6:42

Free Music Review: Excellent, much more than I expected
Hit: 5 Stars

I often hear a snippet of a song and buy the album (being the music fanatic that I am) - when I heard Dido on the radio one day I knew I wanted to know more about the dulcet voice that had me so enamored.

Buying albums based on one song is usually a bad idea. However, Dido has proven to have a really amazing, excellent album with No Angel. I really loved it the first listen through, and now after a few more I am in love with her music.

How to describe? Well, the first comparable performer I suppose would be Sarah McLachlan - though distinctly unique, I was lulled into a warm smooth groove listening to this album, much like the warm fuzzy funky feeling I get from Sarah's music.

Let's talk about some of the tracks I like in particular:

Thankyou (track 6) is of course an excellent song, plays so well and is a joy to experience. This is the piece that got my attention in the first place, her rich voice is like relaxing in a bath of warm water with a belly full of comfort food.

My Lover's Gone (track 4) is really tremendous, the use of harmony and instrumentation takes me to a place of intimate sadness and beauty.

Honestly OK (track 7) - what a cool song. A stunning vocal score and really absorbing groove.

Best word to describe this album: smooth. Buy it.

Free Music Review: Something old, something new
Hit: 5 Stars

I first heard Dido in a movie theater, of all places, tucked in among the dull pre-movie elevator music. I'm a devotee of most "chick singers," including Sarah and Indigo Girls, and Dido immediately stuck out as someone I would enjoy. So when I left the theater I ordered "No Angel" right away, and when it came I...put it on my shelf and forgot about it. This was in late 1999 or early 2000. Then, in June 2000, a friend recommended it to me, and I've been hooked ever since. I've always compared her voice to Sarah's, but when you hear them back to back you realize that there's more of an edge to Dido, a distinction that is very clear in her lyrics. Her songs are a little angrier and lean a little more toward empowerment and strength than Sarah's typical go-gently-into-the-night sorrow songs. They deal with real-world issues like love, breaking up, cheating, and even abortion rather than Sarah's angels and mysteries. Someone else here compared No Angel to Sarah's song "Possession," and I would agree; I would say it's much more like that entire album---Fumbling Toward Ecstasy. But Dido puts a spin on it that is all her own. I'm looking forward to her next album.

Oh, and I try to ignore her connection with Eminem. It makes me feel better.
