Free Music Notes for Safe Trip HomeFree Music Review: YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO THIS 3 TIMES TO START TO GET IT Hit: 5 Stars
WHEN I FIRST LISTENED TO IT, I WAS MISSING THE VARIOUS DIFFERENT RHYTHMS OF HER PAST ALBUMS. WHEN I WAS ALONE ONE NIGHT, HAD SOME RED ZIN, LIT SOME CANDLES, I FINALLY GOT IT. IT IS REALLY, REALLY PERSONAL AND A MIX BETWEEN DIDO/SADE/TRACY CHAPMAN/THE CARPENTERS. I FIND IT ABSOLUTELY MESMORIZING ESPECIALLY WHEN I PUT ON A SET OF HEADPHONES AND REALLY HEARD THE MUSIC AND THE LYRICS. ONE SONG THAT I CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO OVER AND OVER IS THE DAY BEFORE THE DAY. IT IS ONE OF THE MOST HEART WRENCHING SONGS I'VE HEARD SINCE KING OF SORROW BY SADE. I'VE LOST MANY LOVED ONES IN THE PAST 2 YEARS AND I HAVEN'T RELATED TO A SONG LIKE THAT IN YEARS. EVEN IF IT'S NOT ABOUT LOSS BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT SHE WAS THINKING WHEN SHE WROTE IT, IT'S HOW I RELATED TO IT. THE SIMPLICITY OF THE GUITAR AND THE VOCAL ARRANGEMENT IS FLAWLESS. A LOT OF REVIEWS ARE LOVING GRAFTON STREET AND IT'S THE ONE SONG THAT I'M TRYING TO FIND IT'S PLACE ON THE ALBUM. I ALSO LOVE QUIET TIME, NEVER WANT TO SAY IT'S LOVE, AND LET'S DO THE THINGS WE NORMALLY DO. DIDO, I GET IT. I REALLY GET THE ALBUM. IT'S ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! THANK YOU FOR STAYING TRUE TO WHO YOU ARE AND NOT FOLLOWING A NORM.
Free Music Review: A great album that got little to no promotion Hit: 5 Stars
After a five year absence, Dido returned in 2008 with "Safe Trip Home". This album is a departure from her electronic based music of the past, which she ditched for a largely acoustic sound. Part of that reason is the change in producers. Her brother Rollo of the band Faithless produced her first two albums- 1999's "No Angel" and 2003's "Life For Rent". On this new album, the production duties were split in half- one half was done by The Ark and the other half was done by Jon Brion, who also did the first single "Don't Believe In Love". A few famous guests stop by on "Safe Trip Home", such as The Roots member ?uestlove on "Never Want To Say It's Love", Brian Eno and Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleetwood on "Grafton Street" and Citizen Cope on "Burnin' Love". This is a wonderful album from start to finish, and the only problem that I have with it is how Arista Records handled the project. It seems as if they were more interested in Jennifer Hudson and Whitney Houston's comeback to give this album proper promotion. Do yourself a favor and purchase this album.
Free Music Review: Moody, melodic, and meticulous Hit: 5 Stars
As usual, Dido addresses the angst of love in life - from the sultry 'Burnin Love' to the acquiescence of settling down (and settling?) in 'Look No Further'. Dido has a message across the whole gamut of emotions, and uses her wonderful voice to accentuate the underlying mood.
The 'meticulous' is in reference to the very crisp instrumentation that is at times subtle, but always a key element in he songs. The lilt in 'lets do the things we normally do' in the midst of a somber farewell is especially notable. The sultry instrumentation in Burnin Love makes the simple (but tragic) lyrics come alive. Makes one want to meet the missing person for an intimate slow slow dance of love. Of course, who is coming to who is always an issue.
This is her best CD so far, as she continues to mature as a musician while also in the arena of life.
Free Music Review: My Safe Trip Home With Dido Hit: 5 Stars
Something changed for Dido on this album. She had nothing left to prove to anyone but herself. 5 years can make you grow so much. Losing a lover, a father. All I can say is, when I first heard, " Don't Believe In Love," I thought what the heck. This is not the Dido I knew. Yet, that is exactly what is so great about this album . Dido takes a chance. True fans will let this music grown on you, and realize how much effort was put into this piece of art.
My Favorites:
Don't Believe In Love
Never Want To Say It's Love
Grafton Street
Look No Further
Us 2 Little Gods
The Day Before The Day
Northern Skies
For One Day
Thank you Dido for not being a sellout, and redefining what a true artist means. Grammy Award winner, hopefully!
Free Music Review: A Masterpiece! Hit: 5 Stars
Like all the other Dido fans, I waited over five years for another album from my favorite musician. I totally agree with one of the reviewers here who said that on first listen the songs are not that impressive. By the second or third listen, however, something magical happens. Every single song is a masterpiece in itself but the album as a whole seems organic. The only thing missing is the song *For One Day* which is on the deluxe edition.
One wonderful addition to the instrumentation is the recorder. Dido has been playing the recorder since she was four years old. Her playing is magical and haunting. In addition to writing the music and lyrics, she plays the recorder, guitar, keyboards, drums and beats.
Outstanding!
