Free Music Notes for White Flag / ParisFree Music Review: Dido continues to be marvelous modern chanteuse Hit: 5 Stars
It would not be accurate to say that Dido 'burst' on to the music scene in late 2000 with her album "No Angel", because album had been on the market for two years already. However, thanks to hip-hop superstar Eminem sampling Dido's song "Thank You" on his own hit song "Stan", people began clamoring for the identity of that haunting voice in the background of "Stan". They discovered that that voice belonged to Dido and her album "No Angel" was readily available for purchase. That album introduced fans to such musical gems as "Here With Me", "Hunter", and the full version of "Thank You". Album sales soared and fans waited for the next production from Ms. Dido Armstrong.
It took a while, but Dido has returned with the first single of her new album "Life for Rent" called "White Flag". It should be noted that the themes that run through Dido's songs are love, self-introspection, and co-dependency bordering on obsession. The wonderful "White Flag" is lyrically similar to its cousin "Here With Me" in that is lamenting a lost love and pining for a return to that love. Musically, it has elements of both "Here With Me" and "Hunter". As with those songs, the musical arrangement for "White Flag" is lush and full, but defers to the true power of this music, Dido's haunting vocals. "White Flag" is a strong start to what can only be hoped to be another big hit album in "Life For Rent". Hopefully, there is still much, much more to come from this beautiful and talented woman.
Free Music Review: Amazing talent Hit: 5 Stars
I wish Dido was one of those talents who would pump out album after album. Unfortunately for us fans, we all have to wait until she feels it's time for a new album, and agreeably so. For that reason I look for whatever miscellaneous songs I can find from her. I can't say that "Paris" is at the top of my list, but it's not terrible either. It's probably a song that could have been included on her "Safe Trip Home" album because it sounds a little more along the lines of that album. Dido is one of the few performers that you don't always know what to expect and the more you listen to her music, the more you like it. "White Flag" has always been a favorite of mine and you'd be hard pressed to find a song you didn't like on either of her first two albums. "Safe Trip Home" took a little getting used to, but only because it's quite different from her first two albums and that can pretty much be expected from any artist.
If your a big fan of Dido, buy this album for your collection. If you're not a huge fan yet, buy her "Live at Brixton Academy" dvd and you'll become a huge fan overnite. I read somewhere that it is the 13th best live concert dvd ever, and that says a lot for an artist who (at the time it was recorded), only had 2 albums out. An Amazing woman with some amazing talent. ENJOY!
Free Music Review: First class track! Hit: 5 Stars
Dido's first single off her new album is simply outstanding! She sticks with her winning formula of sweet vocals, subtle beats and touching lyrics and it's a success once again!Although some may criticise Dido for being too "same same" one listen of "White Flag" will really make you appreciate her unique sound. Why would you ever want to go for a different sound when the current is so movingly fantastic? The thing with Dido is that you honestly believe what she is singing about. This, I believe, is the sign of a true artist! Track two is a non album track, which is a real treat for the fans! "Paris" could easily have been included as a track on the album. The simple guitar ensures the focus remains on Dido's vocals and lyrics. Such a sad tale of love, Dido adds a real, believable emotion to a beautiful ballad to make it what it is. The "Johnny Toobad remix" is an unfortunate addition which left me both appreciating the original version of "White Flag" and wondering why a ballad must be transformed into a remix. They are ballads for a reason! Don't let this put you off though as "Paris" is enough reason to purchase this one!
Free Music Review: I don't know how she does it.. ! Hit: 5 Stars
White flag is Dido's first single taken from Life For Rent. 1. White Flag - It's a splendid love song. It talks about loving someone and being afraid to tell them so, because it can mess things up. "I know you think that I shouldn't stil love you or tell you that. But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it, where's the sense in that?"..."I'm in love and always will be"... White Flag is powerful yet remains simple and pure at the same time. Quite easy to relate to. 2. Paris - a B-side is a folkish song which showcases Dido's voice in all its beauty. With only the guitar and strings, Paris sounds almost like an acapella. Some may find it boring because of that, well, I don't. I think that's what makes this song different and beautiful. 3. Johnny Toobad mix - I don't like remixes in general, they use always the same formula of adding the (same) beats to the song, which I don't find so original. Surprisingly, this one is more interesting then I thought. It's kind of growing on me, but still, it remains just a remix to me. :o)
Free Music Review: Dido's much awaited comeback Hit: 5 Stars
Here with us, after what seemed a far too long break. But not only doesn't she measure up to the strongest songs in 'No Angel', with the single 'White Flag / Paris' she in fact surpasses our expectations - well, certainly mine. The melody, the arrangement of strings vs. electronic, and *that* voice. She seems to have expanded her range. And the firmly rooted in reality poignancy of the lyrics is the good fish out of the murky waters of pop. She proves herself unique, again. But we were all aware of that from the first time we ever listened to her out of this world harmonies, weren't we? Well, some of us were. I would like to believe all who will listen to this will be, as well.
