Free Music Review: A beautiful and classic debut
Hit: 5 Stars

In 1993 Digable Planets gave the world music like it had never seen before, establishing themselves as hip hop's most forward thinking collective and changing the face of the genre. "Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space)" is an amazing debut album from the Brooklyn trio of Ladybug, Butterfly, and Doodlebug. While groups like A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, and Gang Starr had fused jazz and hip hop before, Digable Planets took it the farthest, using full length instrumental breaks, live instrumentation, and a conceptually jazzy feeling that remains constant through this and their equally amazing sophomore album, "Blowout Comb". The music is amazing, it's the true beauty of Digable Planets. Their lyricism is also so smooth though. They rap abstract thoughts but also tell of experiences and their hometown. The trio has the ability to paint pictures in your mind, they're quite talented at it. They have beautiful subtle voices that mesh so well with jazz music, be it just talking or rapping. Their chemistry is also quite remarkable. "Reachin'..." is an album I highly recommend to all fans of jazz, hip hop, and all in between.

The happy sounding "It's Good to Be Here" introduces the trio in grand style, opening the album with a great upbeat funkier song. "Pacifics" is certainly a highlight, a song with great sampling and lyricism, painting a picture of a sunny early morning in the city. It's a great relaxing song. "Where I'm From" is amazing, one of the greatest products of the jazz rap movement. The rhymes are awesome, great examples and lyricism, and I love the production. "What Cool Breezes Do" provides exactly what the title would suggest, and "Time and Space (A New Refutation of)" has awesome horns. "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" is obviously their most well known song, a classic, great bass and rhymes, a well known chorus. "Last of the Spiddyocks" shows their unique abstract rhyming technique, with great instrumentation on the track. "Jimmi Diggin' Cats" has a head bobbin' beat, and the most relevant track is the anti-abortion cut "Le Femme Fatal". Despite its strong message, the music is as chilled out as ever. The next two, "Escapism (Gettin' Free)" and "Appointment at the Fat Clinic" are both great, funny and beautiful. "Nickel Bags" is one of the best from the group's catalog, and the funky "Swoon Units" and expansive "Examination of What" close the album on a strong note.

This album is one of the most original and unique albums to come from the 1990s, and unfortunately it has never received the credit it deserves. I highly recommend this, as well as it's follow up, to all fans of music from the era, it will appeal to many people of different musical tastes.

Reachin Poster

Digable Planets deliberately disavowed the toughness of hip-hop culture: the trio's leader called himself Butterfly, his foil Ladybug purred like Eartha Kitt, and they produced hooks out of lines like "We're just babies, man." Despite occasional flashes of sorrow (like the pro-choice recitation "La Femme Fétal"), the group's happy and laidback on this debut, with tracks made out of old jazz records and finger-snaps, and words that draw on 50s hipster slang. Reachin' spawned the Grammy-winning single "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," and after this album, their joyous Blue Note-and-black-lights bounce lost some of its novelty. --Douglas Wolk
