Free Music Notes for Bronx in BlueFree Music Review: Can you say Grammy? Hit: 5 StarsDion took 50+ years of musical influences and stripped it down to the bare essentials: guitar, voice, and a hint of percussion. It all adds up to 14 tracks that should earn him a Grammy nomination: twelve blues covers and two originals that took days to record, not months or years. As he wrote in the liner notes, no overdubs were used, and almost everything was one take. His guitar playing, often overlooked because of his stellar voice, has never been better. He has always been labeled as a great interpreter of songs, and this disc rams this fact home. Most of these tracks are easily more recognizable in their Allman Brothers, Cream, electrified versions, but the originators of these classics are smiling down on the man who took these songs back to their roots and gave them renewed life. Fans of Dion and the blues in general will give this disc countless spins. Fans of both will truly be in music heaven!!
Free Music Review: Dion always had it, still does! Hit: 5 StarsEven as a kid, when the Belmonts were playing you listened. There was something there, the whole group yes. But it was always the vocal style of Dion that was gritty and real. And this latest CD album only confirms it, even at 65 yo the guy is real, and always was.
The guitar is hot, not perfect, but exhibits soul. I don't play perfect guitar either, and I don't like it when an album is polished by an engineer or producer. You won't find this here, it just rocks.
And Dions' country leanings are still mixed with that soul that made a young man write a line like, " And I tear open my shirt and show 'em Rosie on my chest", about a guy on his block that was wanderlust for the World and Dion showed a way to tell it. Gritty.
The East Coast has some of the best! Springsteen, South Side Johnny, and Dion. Good song writers, performers, and simply not afraid to share who they were, are, and hopefully, will be!
Dion playing the Blues, who'd a thunk it? Me, and I'm glad he does.
Free Music Review: As good as it gets! Hit: 5 StarsHere it is only March of 2006 and I have already heard the Album of the Year and the Blues album of the decade! This is as good as it gets with acoustic blues. Eric Clapton probably prays to this every night. This is the album Bruce Springsteen should be releasing in April instead of Pete Seeger tribute. Dion is just breathtakingly wonderful on this album. Every song is a treasure. Here is hoping that there is more of this in his system, be it acoustic of small combo electrified blues. This is just the kind of album you can't stop listening to. It gets into your bloodstream and your heart and soul and just becomes part of you. It is just WONDERFUL!
Free Music Review: Perfect! Hit: 5 StarsWow, what a productive two-day recording session for Dion! He sounds as good as ever, and the acoustic guitar/kick drum combo (which is all that was used for this entire album ) is all that is needed for this extremely genuine trip down South. Many of his interviews and writings have discussed the Southern blues being the basis for his famous music, but this album really proves it. Although he's an Italian boy from the Bronx, he sells the Southern style better than Muddy Waters himself. Many of these songs are from the 1930's, yet they're not dated at all. If you're a blues fan, Dion fan, or just want an awesome, meaty CD, you must buy this. The packaging is also well done and the liner notes are very extensive, with a blurb on each song. The production quality is also perfect, taking advantage of recent advancements in digital audio technology.
Free Music Review: Dion Lives the Blues Hit: 5 StarsDion has not only shown his multifaceted musical skills, but his feel for the blues comes from within. Anyone can play the blues, but Dion puts his entire being into the music. This is Blues as it should be done.
