Free Music Review: Dion never fades away; just gets more authentic...
Hit: 4 Stars

Bringing it all back to the Bronx! What a pleasant surprise! Former teen Wanderer truly does have blues cred: he can walk it; he can talk it! This'll never be a runaway best seller, yet it should qualify as one of the best albums of the year and one of the best of his career. When's the tour start?

I'm a huge Dion fan and this album still surprised me by how great it was. I've heard many of these tracks played by both the original artists and in cover versions, but Dion clearly understands and is motivated by the feeling behind these songs, particularly the Robert Johnson tunes. I was doubly surprised by his own guitar work as I always think of him foremost as a singer and songwriter. One of my favorite albums this year worth many repeat listens.

Free Music Review: Best kept secret in music
Hit: 5 Stars

Excellent CD. Just Dion, his guitar and a percussionist. Amazingly full sound, due to richness of Dion's voice and outstanding guitar fills and solos. Nobody (including me) even knew he could play guitar! I'm old enough that I've been a fan back to his doo-wop days. Here he tackles several blues classics and includes a couple of originals. Fans of acoustic blues should NOT pass this one up. Essential to your CD collection.

Free Music Review: Wicked!!
Hit: 5 Stars

It is getting a bit tedious how every singer in the world has come out with a stripped down blues album over the past 10 years or so ("From the Cradle" copycats). However, this offering is a pleasant change. Accompanied only by himself on guitar and an occasional percussion, Dion lays it down with an impassioned, authentically felt, delivery of these blues standards. Highlights include Howlin' Wolf's "Built for Comfort" (a great version covered by Wolf himself on the London Sessions album) and "Who Do You Love" (apart from Ronnie Hawkins' "Last Waltz" version, perhaps the best rendition you will hear, seriously. Picture this: stride into some dingy New York club, sit down with a beer and slowly become mesmerized by a lone unknown singer on the smokey stage delivering some of the best stripped down blues you ever heard. At the end of the set, he introduces himself as Dion. You promptly fall over in surprise. That's the effect of this album. Walk, no run, out and get this one!!

Free Music Review: Dion - Bronx in Blue
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a great blues CD. It is performed by a man who has obviously dedicated himself to a study of the blues guitar. Everyone knows Dion's hits from the 50's and they are great. But what he offers here is thoughtful and soulful interpretations of great blues songs that influenced him long ago. What is most surprising and interesting his his guitar playing. It shouldn't come as a surprise, he was one of the first pioneers of the Fender Stratocaster in the mid-50's. But he is more known for his great voice and songwriting abilities. His acoustic blues playing on this CD is superb and inspiring. You need this CD!
