Free Music Review: Dion's rousing tribute to fifties guitar heroes

What a high energy album this is!
Dion (DiMucci), at 68, reaches back to all of his Rock buddies from the late '50's (and early '60's). He and band, particularly Crow Richardson, try to recreate the guitar players sound without necessarily doing an exact copy of the original songs.
Dion does an inspired rockin good job on Buddy Holly "Rave On" and Richie Valens "Come On, Let's Go" songs. Dion was there in Clear Lake, Minn, a doowop teen crooner and singer of "The Wanderer" and "Ruby Baby" before decades of shooting heroin quieted his talent for forty some years. Dion was supposed to be on the plane fifty year ago this month. He gave his seat up, as the DVD says, and took the bus, and Holly, Valens and The Big Bopper got in the four seater plane with too much ice on the wings, The Day the Music Died.
Herein Richardson plays lead, a lot of hollow body Gretch guitar sound, tube amps out in the hallway to create organic reverb, so "Summertime Blues" comes across much as the Eddie Cochran original. Very Happy. Later Richardson plays Telecasters. Dion ONLY plays acoustic rhythym guitar here, NOT the wonderful rolling lead, as he did on "Dion -Bronx in Blue" (Maybe the best album of the last five years).
He picks some great songs, "Jailhouse Rock", the best Elvis song, before Col. Tom Parker softened his image, "Be-Bop-a-Lula" the Gene Vincent and the Blue Flames classic when Gene was the hottest, scariest thing in Rock. (Vincent was the first Rocker to be arrested for "obscene lyrics", rediculously tepid by today's standards). Dion sings a spirited version of Del Shannon's "Runaway", complete with Farfisa Organ. His choice of Chuck Berry's great song "Sweet Little Rock and Roller" is ironic, considering Berry's proclivaties..
Dion says in the DVD, musicians today are too much like Sesame Street's Oscar the Grouch: angry, grumpy, noisy music (not to mention a lack of talent and practice). In the fifties, music was fun, with infectious catchy melodies!
This album is Fun Fun Fun, from beginning to end. Great memories of 50's guitar masters, some of whom stood at the side behind better known leads -James Burton behind teen idol Ricky Nelson comes to mind - "I Believe What You Say".
Also included here are covers of: the Everly Bros. "Bye bye Love", Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line", Carl Perkin's "Blue Suede Shoes", Roy Orbison's "Dream Baby", Bill Haley and the Comet's "Shake Rattle and Roll" and Bo Diddley's "Who do you Love".
And he ends it all with a rousing version of the "Wanderer"!
Highest recommendation to drive away the recession doldrums!
