Free Music Review: A look at the past helps them move forward

For those that are not familiar with Dir en grey, they are a band known for their ever-changing sound that has recently seen influences by death metal, nu-metal and progressive metal. With Uroboros, they do a great job of fusing their newer metal sounds and influences with their earlier oriental sounds. Uroboros features many different sounds and a wide variety of textures that would appeal to a fairly large audience.
Over the past 13 years, Dir en grey have crafted albums that displayed an extremely wide spectrum of music. Uroboros, however, demonstrates strong cohesion that almost makes it seem as if the entire album is simply one long, epic song. The overall tone of this well-integrated album is unearthly and brooding. From the multi-faceted Vinushka - a song that demonstrates the versatile characteristic of the band - to the restrained power of Toguro, to the reckless abandon of Gaika Chinmoku ga Nemuru Koro, Uroboros never fails to please. Dir en grey succeeds in melding each song with the next to facilitate continuous play of the album. To give you an idea of the strong unity between the songs, play this album from beginning to end and let it repeat. You won't feel as if there is a defined stopping point - it can just keep going and going.
The 5 members of the band are each given their time to shine on the album. Kyo, with his ear-piercing shreaks and stomach churning growls, never ceases to amaze. He jumps from octave to octave, scream to growl, psychotic screech to guttural. His vocal prowess and emotional intensity are omnipresent on Uroboros and it would be difficult to dislike his versatility. His vocal lines and melodies seem to the be the main focus of Uroboros. The two guitar players craft complex, intertwining melodies and harmonies that, while fairly simple by themselves, create grandiose, passionate sounds when fused together. The bass player creates crawling basslines that compliment both the guitar players harmonies and the drummers rhythms. Various percussive sounds and incredibly complex and syncopated rhythms are created by the drummer - who has written arguably his best work on Uroboros.
Overall, Uroboros is an intense, chaotic, yet cohesive album that can please metal heads, older Dir en grey fans, and newcomers to the J-rock scene. Though it will take a few listens to really get into their newer, unique sound.
