Free Music Review: Dire Straits cranks out another winner
Hit: 4 Stars

I've always been a half-hearted Dire Straits fan. I own several of their albums and I saw them live on this tour. It's hard for any music fan to dislike Dire Straits, but I do find them hard to "love". I suppose the main reason for that is that Mark Knopfler's style is so unique that it's hard to escape. In some ways, every Dire Straits album sounds almost the same to me. This is the main reason I can't give Brothers In Arms a 5-star rating. In fact, I'm not even sure I'd agree that this is their best release. Both Making Movies and Love Over Gold are also extremely good releases.

Despite all that, there are some great tunes on this album. Check out So Far Away, Walk of Life, The Man's Too Strong, and Brothers in Arms for great examples of what makes Mark Knopfler one of the best guitarists of his day.

The other outstanding aspect of this album is the recording itself. The sound quality is superb, much like Love Over Gold. I could listen to this album over and over merely for the sound.

There probably aren't many people out there that are completely unfamiliar with Dire Straits after Sultans of Swing and Money For Nothing. If you are, I'm not sure there's anything I can tell you to help you to decide whether or not you'd like this album. For the other 99.9% of us, though, if you like any Dire Straits at all, you most certainly will not be disappointed with Brothers In Arms.

Hit: 4 Stars

heres how every song is.

so far away...great, excellent.

money for nothing...classic one of the best of dire straits.

walk of life...classic last rocking song on it.

your latest trick...good intro to the song. not my favorite.

why worry...it's ok to me its too sad. i love the end of it.

ride across the river...listen to this. this is great guitar.

the man's too strong...i hate this song. the worst. too slow.

one world...pretty good.

brothers in arms...good ending close. another sad song.

Free Music Review: Understanding
Hit: 5 Stars

All through the 80's and early 90's I traveled the Southeast setting up large sound reinforcement for concert and events. In my travels I had been lucky enough to work with Dire Straits, Toto (and many others). I received a Toto CD (1983) Toto IV, and a Dire Straits cassette, Brothers In Arms (1985). These lived in the Road Case with the Tascam 112R and the Techniques SLP. They, the CD and Cassette were used at every location to setup audio levels. Subsequently I became immune to both bodies of work. Not long ago the WORN OUT cassette of Brothers In Arms resurfaced and encouraged me to listen to it. I then became motivated to buy the CD and give a real listen. I suggest that you do the same. If you do not like this type of music you should pick something else to review and listen to. If you are trying to compare today with yesterday that will always be invalid, hey! Yesterday (unless you were born yesterday) is ALWAYS BETTER THAN TODAY! There is NO BAD CUT ON THIS ALBUM, period. They might not fit your taste, your problem. Mark Knopfler has only two rivals in the unique, catchy, cannot stop humming them guitar hook areana, Paul and Eric. I will admit that many of the lyrics I do not understand. I like them but they are either too simple or I am. In example from The Man's Too Strong,
"I have legalized robbery, called it belief
I have run with the money, I have hid like a thief
Re-written history with armies and my crooks
Invented memories, I did burn all the books"
I close this review with my favorite lyric that even I understand. It is both evocative and provocative but is the most delicately put version of this statement that I have ever seen.
Well the sun rose on the courtyard and they all did hear him say
"You always was a Judas, but I got you anyway
You may have got your silver but I swear upon my life
Your sister gave me diamonds and I gave 'em to your wife"
Even I understand THAT!

Free Music Review: Positively Brilliant!
Hit: 5 Stars

What more praise can be lavished on this album - wow! Brothers in Arms was Mark Knopfler's tour de force. It made 1985 that much more enjoyable as a high school sophomore. I knew of Dire Straits before this thanks to my sister, but this album blew me away. Massive guitar riffs, crashing drums and humorous as well as poetic lyrics. There were strains of Dylan ("So Far Away"), Springsteen ("Walk of Life") and pure Dire Straits ("Money for Nothing"). The title track is beautiful. A masterpiece you have to own.
