Free Music Review: Underrated and a must have...
Hit: 5 Stars

'Communique' was unfairly criticised after the critical acclaim that the first one received. The first one is good but this one is also. It is the most underrated Dire Straits' album. A significant one for the band not just because it was the last one to feature the original lineup including David Knopfler; the group's personnel changed frequently thereafter.

All nine songs, whilst not among the very best or most famous of their work are very appealing and there are no duds here. Knopfler's story-telling provides an interesting scenario throughout. The recording location is powerful as well. Its a more laid-back sound and introduces keyboards which their first album did not have. 'Once Upon A Time in the West' features a reggae beat which the band rarely used.

Perhaps if they had a major hit single or radio faviourite from this one it would have performed better. 'Lady Writer' is most likely to have been released as a single. 'Single Handed Sailor' is another strong track from the album. It then gives way to the crashing of the waves which open the closing 'Follow Me Home' which is flawless.

All in all a solid effort from the group before they made it big, released at a time when punk and disco dominated the headlines. Almost 25 years later and this album - as is their debut album - is still a sound for all time.

Free Music Review: Excellent pick
Hit: 5 Stars

As I become more and more familiar with this band, this album continues to emerge as a personal favorite. There is a mix of sound here which seems to epitomize Dire Straits as a band and Mark Knopfler as a guitarist. This is a happy 'in-between' album; it presents a clear development and refinement of the self-titled debut, and it captures the brilliance of the band before they put out a few pop sucesses with "Brothers in Arms." That album is indeed a classic pop piece, but it is a significant departure from what many fans feel the band does best- that mysterious blues/rock/jazz swing that is so distinctive. It is, by comparison, a weak album. Here, Dire Straits fans and first-time listeners alike should find the height of what the band does best. See the title track, a nifty rocker called "Angel of Mercy," and the beautiful "Portobello Belle" for evidence. In my opinion, the single must-have Dire Straits album for any serious listener.

Free Music Review: Rediscovering Dire Straits
Hit: 5 Stars

What a great band in their prime! Warner Bros. have remastered the Dire Straits catalog (too bad they didn't add bonus cuts) and they sound better than ever. Communique is a great album. There is not a dud on the album. Not one. The guitar work is jazzy, melodic, and crisp. Mark Knopfler is a great musician. This came out originally in 1979 but it's sound is timeless. Smooth, masterful soundscape with great story/lyrics. "Angel of mercy, angel delight, give me my reward in heaven tonight." You will be rewarded when listening to this masterpiece.

Even though I have most of their catalog on tape/album, I have begun to purchase the remasters one by one. Next up is Brother's in Arms (Even though I can not stand the song Money for Nothing, it is the non-radio songs on it that shine for me). Fans of the first album "Dire Straits" may be interested in hearing those songs on the disc "live at the BBC".

Free Music Review: Amazing follow-up, don't listen to those who say it isn't
Hit: 5 Stars

Communiqué is a really good follow-up to the band's debut album.
Once Upon a time in the west is very similar to "The Gallery" on "Dire Straits" but I think it's a better song than The Gallery. "News" is a really cool song too, something about it blows me away. Where do you think you're going is cool too, and the song "Communiqué" is certainly worthy of having the album named after it, it's great all around. The real masterpiece of the album, however, is Lady Writer, a song I can't stop listening to. Great chord progression and tempo make this song amazing.
Angel of Mercy and Portobello Belle are songs I like also, they're softer but still good. My personal favorite on the album "Single Handed Sailor" is next, it's fun to listen to and a great song all-in-all. Follow me Home is a good end to the album, making this a must-have for anyone who likes Dire Straits, 80's music or just Rock in general.

Free Music Review: No sophomore slump here
Hit: 5 Stars

Tasteful guitar licks, intelligent lyrics, gruff voice. This album defines the Knopfler sound for me. There aren't any "hits" on this album, just consistently good songs. Sure, Brothers In Arms was the biggie for the band, but I'll bet Knopfler had more fun with stuff like this rather than trying to create the next big album. After BIA and the touring that followed, I think Knopfler had to take some major time off (6 years before the band's next release) to decide how he wanted to fit into the music biz. I'm guessing the fame and fortune wasn't what he was after in the first place. Just the chance to play music on his own terms. Marginal Dire Straits fans probably don't have this album in their collection, and it's a shame. Knopfler has always been one of my favorite guitar players, and I'm constantly reminded of it whenever I put this one on.
