Free Music Notes for Love Over Gold

Free Music Review: Simply Put - Quality
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been very critical of 2000's music for a variety of reasons. For the most part, my main criticism has been what I term a cookie-cutter guitar laden sound combined with un-improvising vocals and un-original lyrics. Many times I've tried to look back and wonder if I am being too harsh on the sounds of the first decade of the 21st century. Then into my collection comes Dire Straits and the album "Love Over Gold". This is an album that is from the early 1980s. In the early 1980s, many people were critical of the sounds of that period for different reasons - namely synth-pop. However, when I listen to "Love Over Gold", this confirms that the music of the 2000s has been very bland, while at the same time time shows that the judgment of the 1980s sound was unfair. Overall, "Love Over Gold" might be one of the best albums that many people never heard.

When you look at "Love Over Gold", you may think of this as an EP as opposed to a full-fledged album. The reason is that this collection only contains 5 tracks. However, you still get over 41 minutes of music on this collection. There isn't a song that is shorter than 5 minutes and 50 seconds and the album's first track, "Telegraph Road" clocks in at 14 minutes. I'm amazed at why this album was criticized for long tracks - this is what gives the album its charm.

Considering the lengths of the tracks on this collection and the complex instrumentation that makes up this album, many have considered this album a progressive rock album. I tend to think the album has progressive rock elements to it. While Dire Straits or lead vocalist, Mark Knopfler cannot be considered a full-fledged progressive rock artist; their style of music clearly is one that can lend them to producing something that contains progressive rock elements. Much of Dire Straits is the result of the awesome guitar work of Knopfler, but there is also some great instrumentation from other band members such as bassist John Illsley. In many circles, Knopfler is considered as good as they come. Knopfler has also proven himself to be a top-notch lyricist - writing both humorous and serious songs. The combination of outstanding instrumentation, great lyrics and a mix of many influencing genres is really what made Dire Straits such a great band. Therefore, I wouldn't consider this progressive element something that is experimental, but something that is more of a natural progression for the band.

Here is a synopsis of the five tracks:

"Telegraph Road": This is a song that is well-known among Dire Straits fans, but unfortunately the casual fan may not hear it as much because conventional radio tends to shy away from tracks that are 14 minutes long. However, this song makes the most of every minute it plays. This is a terrific song. This song has more of an epic Rock feel (especially with the instrumentals) and the beginning is cut in the mold of the early days of Bruce Springsteen as opposed to a pure progressive rock sound. In fact, the keyboards remind me a lot of how Springsteen integrates keyboards in his music. The song has a narrative feel as it tells the story of the growth of a society. The amazing thing is how Dire Straits integrates a bit of a Rockabilly fusion at the end of the song - something that is more of a trademark of Dire Straits (and this helps contribute to the progressive elements of the song).

"Private Investigations": This is another well-known song among Dire Straits fans and may have been heard by some casual fans. This song is known for it's haunting elements. The haunting element gives the song the strongest progressive feel of all the tracks. Knopfler speaks the lyrics as opposed to sings them - helping to add to the "dark feel of the song". Illsley's bass also adds to the dark feel. At the same time, you can hear every note crystal-clear on this track. At times the guitar work has a bit of a Latin-style feel to it. This song is a story told by someone who is a - private investigator.

"Industrial Disease": The keyboards in the very beginning of this song almost remind me of a later song - "Walk of Life". The one single released from this album, this sometimes gets overshadowed by the brilliance of "Telegraph Road" and "Private Investigations". This song takes a lighter feel as opposed to the serious tones of the first two songs on the collection. It has more of a traditional Dire Straits feel including a bit of a the trademark Rockabilly fusion. The song takes a humorous look at the impacts of diseases resulting from the industrial revolution. If you haven't heard it, this song will catch on quickly.

"Love Over Gold": This is the title track. This is the one track that takes a while to catch on to, but each time you listen to it - it does begin to catch on. Much of this reason is that this song has a slower pace. The instrumentation is going to be the highlight of this song. There are even some moments where I felt the guitar work had a bit of a Latin influence on it.

"It Never Rains": This is actually the second longest collection the track. While not as peppy as "Industrial Disease", this song also has its light moments. My favorite line is "And your new Romeo; was just a gigolo when he let you down." The guitar work also reminds me a bit of the "Rockabilly" sound.

The liner notes include all of the lyrics to all each of the five tracks. This may seem like a small collection of long songs - and it definitely is. However, the quality of what is included in this collection far exceeds the sum of the parts. Highly recommended.
