Free Music Review: Highlights from my favorite band of all time

I was introduced to Dire Straits almost 10 years back. Earlier I listened to one of their songs and was not impressed and I even remember giving 'I don't like Dire Straits' comments to people with my face indicating ignorance...One day a radio show, an hour-long Dire Straits special changed it all. I do not remember what are the songs that was played on that show but it resulted purchase of my first Dire Straits, a 'Money for nothing' compilation tape and I was hooked to their music since then and I still consider them my favourite group of all time even after listening a lot and lot of music.
I have owned all of their studio album + all Mark Knopfler albums except 'Shangri la', first in tape and in ACD format. This particular compilation sums up Dire Straits quite well. Definitely a double CD would have been better but as they have only 6 studio album, a single CD compilation is not bad as an introduction to this great band.
Sultans of Swing - Taken from their debut self titled album, this contains probably Mark Knopfler's most acclaimed guitar-work. It still brings shivers down my spine even after 10 years since the first listen. A true Essential and probably my second favorite Dire Straits track.
Lady Writer - The best track from the second album 'Communique'. A typical fast Dire Straits number.
Romeo and Juliet - From the third album 'Making Movies'...one of the best and most romantic Dire Straits track ever. Wonderful emotive vocal by Mark Knopfler.
Tunnel of Love - Also from 'Making Movies', my favorite DS album, this is my favorite DS track of all time. A true classic and a huge fan favorite...
Private Investigations - A slower mainly instrumental track with vocal commentry. A big hit from the fourth album 'Love over gold'.
Twisting by the Pool - Not from any studio album, this was released as a single. This is rock n' roll heaven.
Love Over Gold [Live] - Live version of title track from 'Love Over gold'. Great.
So Far Away - From the fifth album 'Brothers in arms', the most successful of their career. Very atmospheric and catchy.
Money for Nothing - Did I called 'So far away' catchy? It is catchier. Sting contributed in this...If you listened to one track by DS, this must be it. From 'Brothers in arms'.
Brothers in Arms - Soldiers in a war...Brilliant mellow track having great guitar-work by the man.
Walk of Life - You already heard this dozens of times. So what do I explain? Also from 'Brothers in arms'.
Calling Elvis - From 'On every street' album. An tribute to Elvis Presley.
Heavy Fuel - From 'On every street'... Another rocker...
On Every Street - A mellow track with starge layered instrumental, Mark KNopfler has started experimentation by this time.
Your Latest Trick [Live] - Live version of the Saxophone driven track from 'Brothers in arms' album.
Local Hero/Wild Theme [Live] - Live sample from his solo career as movie soundtrack composer. Superb.
Although as an avid fan of the group, I would ask you to go for the albums but this is probably the best introduction to the band. I am not a fan of compilation but have to give it full marks...5 stars.
Eagerly waiting to see Mark Knopfler live on March 7, 2005 in my city.

This compilation repeats seven tracks from 1988's Money For Nothing anthology. Given that Mark Knopfler and crew have recorded one new album during the decade between best-of collections, how different could Sultans of Swing be? For one thing, CD dominance has made for longer compilations, and this one is fleshed out by singles, three tracks from 1991's On Every Street, and Knopfler's solo "Local Hero" theme, performed live. More importantly, the second track here is the band's terrific second single, "Lady Writer," previously only available on the otherwise dismal Communiqué LP. Five tracks from Dire Straits' huge Brothers in Arms LP appear here, but only two tracks surface from Making Movies, the group's pinnacle achievement. Ultimately, if you own Making Movies and this compilation, you own the essential Dire Straits. --Bill Holdship
