Free Music Notes for Sultans of Swing - Very Best ofFree Music Review: The Editing Is Really Terrible!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I'll say this item is good, great but I think it is terrible
that they edited most of the songs, and it is missing too many
songs, like where's Skateaway, where's Expresso Love, where's
Solid Rock. More songs are missing. I am a huge Dire Straits fan.
I own all of their albums, especially this. I have been listening to this record since 2002. I'm not crazy about Money
for Nothing being edited so the best songs are Tunnel of Love

Free Music Review: Sultans Of Swing Hit: 5 Stars
I love Dire Straits. I love Mark's attitude, and he's an excellent guitar player, plus he can adapt his voice to any song they are playing. Their videos are really fun to watch, too, so I recommend getting the DVD with this.
Dire Straits began as a band with really groovy rhythms, take Sultans Of Swings, Lady Writer or Down To The Waterline (not available here, shame). And, with an ever changing lineup, the band began evolving. Not that they were better, because they've always been equally good, but Mark was becoming more emotional with his music and you can see much more emotion in songs like Your Latest Trick, On Every Street or Wild Theme.
Sultans Of Swing - One of my 10 favourite songs of all time. Mark's guitar sounds great here. The whole band is doing an excellent performance. Two of the greatest solos ever recorded in rock, and for guitar players, the second one isn't as difficult as it seems! /10
Lady Writer - Another song with a great rhythm, and once again excellent guitars. Great song, I love it. 10/10
Romeo And Juliet - Never been a fan of this, but when I do listen to it, I have a huge blast. Some good lyrics. From this point onwards we don't get anymore of the groovy rhythm of the first two songs. 9/10
Tunnel Of Love - Huge epic. Excellent song. I like the instrumental near the end. Great video too, except for the dancing in the tunnel scenes -- What the hell? 10/10
Private Investigations - Has got some nice guitars, but the vocals sound horrible and the ending is boring. 5/10
Twisting By The Pool - Classic tune. Not very memorable, but a huge blast. Nice solo. 9/10
Love Over Gold - Perhaps the most mature composition yet. I love the instrumental breaks. Great song. 9/10
So Far Away - I love this song! Great riffs, great bass, and excellent lyrics. 9.5/10
Money For Nothing - I will commit the crime of saying the 4 minute version is pretty good. This one's great though, because near the end you get to listen to that riff over and over again. I love this song. 10/10
Brothers In Arms - Classic. I don't know what I like so much about this song, but it rocks. And so does the video. Really good track. 10/10
Walk Of Life - And yet another song from Brothers In Arms, a a great track. Who hasn't listened to this before? Great backing vocals in the chorus. Yeah! 10/10
Calling Elvis - Weakest song here (not counting Private Investigations). 8/10
Heavy Fuel - Not crazy about this but it's a real blast. Heavy heavy fueeeeel! 8.5/10
On Every Street - Closes with a great instrumental part, and has got an excellent saxophone riff. Really good. 9/10
Your Latest Trick - Wow! Awesome saxophone riff. I love it. One of my favourite songs ever, and in my top 3 by Dire Straits (Sultans Of Swing, Money For Nothing and this one). The stuido version is even better. 10/10
Wild Theme - Pretty good solo, very melodic, unlike some solo guitarists out there. Great song, again, very emotional. 9/10

Free Music Review: Knopfler: A Slow Hand as cool as Clapton Hit: 5 Stars
I read in an interview that Mark Knopfler considered his guitar technique to be limited by his lack of speed. Certainly there are those who seek minor guitar deities to worship who exhibit as their defining characteristic the ability to speed up and down the neck of their six-string. My wife says that some pianists sound like a mouse running around on the keyboard. I would argue that these guitarists are the string equivalent of the "running around on the keyboard" pianists. I won't bother naming names - if you've gotten this far in my review you can probably already name 2 or 3.
This bring us to Mark Knopfler, who admits that he is not as "fast" as some. Why is his music so popular, then? Why do musicians such as Chet Atkins actively seek Mark out for musical projects? The answer is clearly that Mr. Knopfler is sublimely "musical". His tunes are tasty and he performs them with a sure-handed style that I think I could describe as "the right notes at the right time." His voice is not Steven Tyler's or Sinatra's, but can you imagine anyone else crooning lines like "money for nothin', and the chicks for free"?
On the title tune of this collection: "Sultans of Swing" makes the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of songs that have been most influential in shaping rock and roll. (No other Dire Straits tunes made the top 500, although a good case could have been made for several including "Walk of Life", "So Far Away" and "Money for Nothing" from just the "Brothers In Arms" CD. "Sultans" stands atop the heap, though, and rightfully so. It's a seductively skillful ballad, with Mark's Straits companions laying down a simple vamping pocket for him to create his masterpiece about the band that plays for their own pleasure. It is ironic that "Sultans" has become so popular because the song depicts a skillful band that could care less about popularity - they play Creole and other music that is ignored by the boys in their "platform soles" who "don't give a damn about any trumpet-playing band, it ain't what they call ROCK and ROLL!" For any musician who has even contemplated straddling that fence between popularity and pandering to the "fans" who could care less about the quality of the music - "Sultans of Swing" is like a national anthem for any musician who devoted themselves to the music.
This collection combines "Sultans" with noticeably many cuts from the previously mentioned "Brothers in Arms", including the title cut from that collection. It also includes Knopler's fine theme from the equally fine film "Local Hero" performed live.
As long as people care about popular music recorded in the 20th century, they will be listening to Dire Straits.
Free Music Review: You Need This Album Hit: 5 Stars
This album is so awesome, I own two great copies of this album.
I have my own, and bob has one too!! Now I will review all of the
songs on this great album.
1. Sultans of Swing-Great album opener with Mark's best ending.
2. Lady Writer-This is also good too, Mark's crazy guitar and vocals are amazing.
3. Romeo and Juliet-No worries about this track.
4. Tunnel of Love-This is one of my favorite Dire Straits songs
ever came out, over 8 minutes of great excellence, and is a track
i can listen to over n over again. Another song to sing along with "On the tunnel of love". Great song.
5. Private Investigations-Skip it, no worries.
6. Twisting by the Pool-Great surf rock song, this song goes even
better by the beach with "Twisting by the pool". Is another song
you can listen to over n over again but it's not one of my favorites. But it's still really good.
7. Love over Gold-Skip it, this is live.
8. So Far Away-Mark at his best. I say this song was my Peoria, IL song because I was so far away from my family.
9. Money For Nothing-What a great intro, typically one of my favorite Dire Straits songs next to Sultans of Swing, Tunnel of
Love, & Heavy Fuel. Mark does great guitars, drums exellent and
vocals rule!! This version is even better since it is 4 insted
of the Brothers in Arms version 8 minutes. This is also another
track I can listen to over n over again.
10. Brothers in Arms-This track felt to slow for me, most people
like it but others like me don't.
11. Walk of Life-Oops, the electric organ. This song is such not
that great because of the organ. Where is that Mark guitar? This
is not like Dire Straits at all.
12. Calling Elvis-The six minute version of this song is slightly
better. This version is near 5 minutes but it's still pretty good.
13. Heavy Fuel-Wow! This is the best song Mark Knopfler ever did!
His guitar is typically heavy metal, and is typically a hard rock
song and his solo rules!!! This is my favorite song on the whole
album.
14. On Every Street-Change to the version at 5 minutes to get this song on the run. I muchly listen to both Calling Elvis, &
this song on the other album, "On Every Street". Nice calm song
to listen to before the hard Heavy Fuel type rock n roll comes
up around 3 in a half minutes with a great rock n roll ending.
Great album.
Love it!!!
You need this album.
