Free Music Review: MEREDITH WILSON MUST BE TURNING IN HIS GRAVE
Hit: 1 Stars

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

Free Music Review: a sad sad attempt
Hit: 1 Stars

After seeing this on TV, I was appalled. I don't believe I even watched the entire thing. I am a long-time fan of The Music Man, and the director, screenwriters, costume designer and several cast members missed the boat on this version. Of course, Kristen sings beautifully, and she acted the role pretty well, too, but that could not save the production as a whole. It was miserable. Matthew Broderick (who I like a lot) especially disappointed me in this. He did not have the charm or the cunning of Professor Harold Hill (surprisingly, the qualities he portrayed so well in Ferris Beuller). Molly Shannon, who I would have thought would make a perfect Eulalie Shinn, camped it up with schtick and no acting whatsoever. And directorally the entire movie was a mess. I don't know what he thought he was doing when he added a fantasy princess dream-sequence into "Mariam the Librarian," but it was wrong and dreadfully cheesy.

If you want a good recording of The Music Man, buy the original. If you want to see a good production of The Music Man, buy the movie with Robert preston. The one star that this recording gets goes to Kristen Chenoweth.

Free Music Review: Kristin Chenoweth Shines, the rest is lack-luster
Hit: 1 Stars

Disney, the studio I grew up with which used to produce wonderful entertainment, has been slipping slowly downward over the years, producing poor quality with only the name Disney to get by. This Music Man is no exception. Kristin Chenoweth, as always, is brilliant! But she sticks out like a sore thumb when up against the likes of Broderick's ho-hum Harold Hill who, by means of the song Trouble is supposed to convince the townfolk that something's amiss in River City. Unfortunately what's amiss is Hill himself. He is no salesman and after this particular redition of Trouble given by Broderick the townsfolk ought to have run him out of town and end the show right then and there.

All thumbs down for this one!

Free Music Review: The Music Nerd
Hit: 1 Stars

Matthew Broderick was horrible as Harold Hill. When I heard he was cast I thought it strange casting, I never expected a boring, static and completely dull version of the character. Also his singing is terrible, it was good for the Producers because he's supposed to be a nerd but not this. Whoever thought he would make a good romatic lead in a musical? He should stick to nerd roles.

Kristin is excellent as Marion, as is most of the cast good in their parts, but without a good lead its useless. Go to the original Broadway cast or movie soundtrack if you want to know what Harold Hill should sound like.

Free Music Review: Don't bother
Hit: 1 Stars

After a friend mentioned that "The Music Man" had been remade with Matthew Broderick, I gave it a listen. After a few minutes I had to stop. I don't think there's ever been a less musical version of any musical. Absolutely no life, no bounce, no excitment, no music. There's absolutely NO reason to witness this travesty, especially since one can watch the definitive version in the 1962 film with Robert Preston. I feel sorry for people who's first exposure to "The Music Man" is the 2003 version. I feel even sorrier for people who watch it and enjoy it.
