Free Music Review: A Review from the Over 20 crowd Hit: 3 Stars
It's no secret that the Disney Company is not afraid of shameless self promotion, and Many times if an actor or muskcal artist appears on their channel, or in a movie, they'll also end up on a CD- Christy Carlson Romano not only voices Kim Possible (on Disney Channel)- she also has a track on the Princess Diaries 2 soundtrack, Hilary Duff, even after leaving Disney to pursue her own interests was all over Disney, and still is (she's even on this CD)- but there's no doubt that Disney is now all about Raven Simone- or just plain Raven as she likes to be called, as you may recall, was the cute little Olivia on The Cosby Show- can be found strategically placed in almost everything Disney- From a song on the Lion King 1 1/2 soundtrack, as well as an a new version of "True to your Heart", to her own Diney Channel Series, to a guest voice on Disney's Kim Possible, to a couple of Disney Channel origianl movies, and even conveniently placed as a new friend in Disney's Princess Diaries 2- so of course she's on this CD (as well as Disneymania 3, and has two of her disney remakes on the upcoming Disney Remixmania-
Although her singing isn't terriblw, it's not good - unless you're in the under 15 crowd, you may want to skip her music- not just on this disc, but all together- (in the motion picture and TV world she's a little bit of an overactor and pretty hammy sometimes)
But fortunatley for the world, Raven is just a small part of this, and although it seems to be tailored to the preteen market there are a few artists and tracks that really stand out on this set:
First: the Beau Sisters- you get two nice doses of these four sisters, they have some amazing voices, and great harmonies, "He's a Tramp" is fun, and "AnytimeYou Need A Friend" (written by Little Mermaid/Beauty and the Beast/Aladdin songwriter Alan Menken) lets them flex a little vocal Muscle)
Second: Daniel Beddingfield- you may or may not remember the Electronic Helium dance hit "Gotta Get Through this" or his slightly bigger success "If you're not the one", but his version of "A Dream is a Wish your Heart Makes" from Cinderella is amazing, it starts out slow, bwuatiful, but it's been done- but suddenly bursts into a Jazzy Swing version that has the feeling of Sinatra and Harry Connick Jr
3 Ashley Gearing- she's still young, but has an amazing voice. Although her version of "When You Wish Upon a Star" isn't innovative, or very different- it is unbelievably beautiful- as long as things go rith- she could have an amazing career ahead of her
As for the rest of the CD: Jesse (son of Beatle Paul) McCartney (Second Star to thye Right) and LMNT's A Whole New World are decent, they don't really offer anything special to the mix, and the Disney Channels Circle of Stars offers a mix of the surprisingly good (Tia and Tamara's little Bro Taj Mowhry) - to the overdoing bunch (the kid from that's so raven drags every note out for about three minutes)- this track probably comes in dead center on this album when it comes to quality
and the rest of the album is just sacchrine sugar coma induced wretch- with larger emphasis on the Baha Men (only a group with one of the annoying songs in musical history- who let the dogs out- could choose one of the OTHER most annoying songs in history - it's a small world - believe me- that ride was excruciating- could come together and actually make you wonder why being deaf is so bad- and Raven's True to your Heart is just dribble- the backing music is almost exactly the same as the original- except the original had the tight Harmonies of Boy Band comes 98 Degrees and legend Stevie Wonder- this one has- well Raven- enough said
Overall- not a bad thing- the Magic of Disney redone by todays mediocre stars- the Beau Sisters and Daniel Beddingfield really bring this one up- but I might recommend Disneymania (the first one)- it offers a few more established artists: Usher, Christina Aguilera, Ashanti, Nsync, Jessica Simpson, and Anastacia (whose caribbean induced "Someday My Prince Will Come" is one of the best versions- well- ever)- But overall not a bad collection
