Free Music Review: GREAT MUSIC!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I love The Ditty Bops, they are very VERY entertaining to listen too. Neither this or that, they are a a great mixture of all the best music styles that have graced the planet. Blues, jazz, country, rock, honky tonk vaudeville, anything from the early 1960's downwards they have successfully blended it all together. Like their first CD, this is a beatutiful composition. Energetic, bright, yet at times dreamy and melancholic, it embodies the summertime in a nutshell. It has a distinct sound that ranges from extremely Southern and East Coast blues all the way to California with this 1950's slide guitar sound. It's almost amazing how diverse they are and it was a shock to find out that they came from the West Coast. My family has reccently gotten really interested in New Orleans jazz and their quirky turn of the century backbones really give their music this extra flavor. The fun thing about them is that they infuse it all with pop, making it never seem too old, always fresh and I like that they take these styles under their wings.

Star Tracks on this album:

# 2 - Angel With an Attitude
~ Quirky, fast beat and a successful blending of their distinct sound, it's a great piece that envokes early 1920's jazz or a saloon....not sure which, it's that versitile

# 5 - Fish to Fry
A casual ditty that just screams roadtrip music. Folksy, bluesy, and all together light, it's simple and plain ear candy.

# 6 - In the Meantime
Another gem, quirky, and driven by a strong fiddle, tinny piano, and guitar. It's lyrics are one of the strongest in my opinion.

# 8 Waking Up In The City
- Another upbeat and jazzy bit that sounds a perfect accompanyment to old cartoons. It makes your toe tap without overstimulation. The vocals are also very mellow and nice.

# 9 Growing Upside Down
Probably the " prettiest" song. Delicate vocals power this song, which has probably the least instruments in the whole album. Their songs are usually driven by Abby, with Amanda as back-up accomanyment, but I think Amanda leads this song. If I'm wrong, they are master voice chameleons.

#10 Get Up 'n" Go
A fast flapperesque honky tonk piece that just compells you to tap your feet. Driven by it's witty use of a washboard. It's a shame it's so short.

# 12 Nosey Neighbor
A playful, theme filled piece that screams Halloween and Murder Mystery. Filled with special effects, creaking wood, violins, and creepily syncronized singing make a giddy performance.

Moon Over the Freeway Poster

"Combining a magical attic?s worth of dusty musical idioms, iridescent golden harmonies and a quirky lyrical worldview, The Ditty Bops provide a refreshing antidote to the misbegotten, soul-grinding notion of thinking you know what happens next.... Abby DeWald (guitar) and Amanda Barrett (mandolin/dulcimer) embody the simple Saturday afternoon pleasures?of thrift store finds and getting lost in the library?with their amalgam of ragtime, jazz, vaudeville, Western swing and folk, but it would sell the Bops short to lump them in with nostalgia-driven absolutists." (Austin Chronicle) The Ditty Bops are different, way different, and that makes the singing-songwriting-playing duo of Amanda Barrett and Abby DeWald special. On their second album, Moon Over The Freeway, co-produced by Mitchell Froom (Suzanne Vega, Crowded House, Elvis Costello) as was their 2004 self-titled debut, The Ditty Bops are strangely, wonderfully captivating.
A singing duo of Amanda Barrett on mandolin and dulcimer, and Abby DeWald on guitar, this is the second release by The Ditty Bops. They draw liberally on genres of yore, hopping from western swing to vaudevillian theatrics, jazz, and folk music. They mine a vein similar to what Dan Hicks was doing with his Hot Licks in the early seventies, though their compositional sensibilities embrace a wider realm. Sympathetically produced by Mitchell Froom (who also plays keyboards, though the dazzling turn at the piano on "Aluminum Can" is by Greg Rutledge), they're joined by some of the finest players to be found in Los Angeles, including the ever-apt percussion of Elvis Costello's longtime drummer, Pete Thomas. While the title song opens the set on a quaint note, by the third number, "Fall Awake," it becomes clear that The Ditty Bops are not to be pigeonholed. The set's one cover, Boudleaux and Felice Bryant's "Bye Bye Love," is sweet but breaks the parade of their own resonant and mysterious songs. --David Greenberger
