Free Music Notes for FlyFree Music Review: Fun, fun, fun! Hit: 5 Stars
While flipping through the liner notes included with the CD, I couldn't help but smile when I saw the various pictures of the Chicks that were included. In one they were riding a rocket, in one they were dressed in black leather and stuck to some fly paper, and in one they were dressed as fairies. It took me a minute to catch on, but "Fly"-ing was the common theme. The creativity that was shown in those photo lay-outs also abounds in the music itself. "Cowboy, Take Me Away" has some awe-inspiring lyrics: "I want to touch the earth. I want to break it in my hands....I want to be the only one for miles." "Sin Wagon" may not be wholesome, but it's fun to dance to. "Ready to Run" proves that it's OK to be without a man in your life, as long as you have good fun and good friends. (Who but the Chicks could mix Celtic folk with country on "Ready to Run" and get away with it?) More extreme than "Wide Open Spaces" on all counts, "Fly" is a delight, whether you're a rock, pop, or country fan.
Free Music Review: THESE CHIX RULE :) Hit: 5 Stars
I don't know how these people can give this CD such a low score! Ya' know, I'm not a big country fan but these girls made me turn to the genre. All of these songs have great melodies, good lyrics (and sometimes funny), and they are always breaking barriers. Everyone criticizes them for being the "Spice Girls of country" but they are so original and so interesting, they are here to stay. Actually, I wouldn't have minded a full cross-over from country to pop. Natalie Maines (the lead singer) is probably one of the most gifted vocalists ever. Her voice is new-sounding and it wraps aroung the melodies. She definitly has a long career infront of her. The only thing, why are the other chix even in the group? They never sing and their instruments are always less dominant than Natalie's. By the way, did u know that the Dixie Chicks appeared on Sheryl Crow's live album and Natalie had a duet w/ Sheryl on Strong Enough and she had a solo in the grand finale featuring Sheryl, Stevie Nicks, Sarah McLachlan, Chrissy Hynde, and Eric Clapton. :) Ta Ta!
Free Music Review: One awesome country album Hit: 5 Stars
Natalie, Emily and Martie showcase their superb musicianship on their second album, FLY. Natatlie lets her great vocals rule, especially on "If I Fall You're Going Down With Me," Don't Waste Your Heart," and "Sin Wagon." Emily's talent on the banjo and dobro really shines through on the entire album, and Martie's fiddle is awesome. Together these three ladies made one amazing country album, producing great songs like "Cowboy Take Me Away" and "Cold Day In July" and "Goodbye Earl." I would describe this as a thoroughly country album with elements of bluegrass, rock, and pop. It's such a good album that it can be listened to over and over. The melodies are sincere, not depending on whether a song is slow or fast. The instrumentation is so great by Emily and Martie. Natalie's voice is so natural and sincere, whether she does a slow ballad or whether she shows a bit of the group's rowdy side on a fast song. These three ladies give you everything on this album and you will not be disappointed.
Free Music Review: CHICKS ROCK!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Natalie and Emily came out recently expressing their love for heavy metal and arena rock...and its obvious on this new album. Some of these songs flat out rock! The best song is the hilarious (Alice Cooperesque) "Good Bye Earl". A hilarious dark song about getting revenge on a wife beater."Hole In My Head" rocks harder than the majority of the songs on those 80s Hair Metal albums. Great song!"Sin Wagon" is a hard rocker with a hint of bluegrass. Kinda like a Hillbilly "Highway To Hell""If I Fall You're Going Down With Me"--another great song. Real uptempo. Reminds me of Vixen meets country."Ready To Run" the already hit single....more pop than rock. Great."Some Days Ya Gotta Dance"--twang/rock. Gonna be a big hit for the ChicksThere are some "country" songs on the cd as well...like "Cold Day In July" (they did do a good job on it but Suzy Bogguss' version is better). The others...well just pick it up...this is the ALBUM OF THE YEAR!!
Free Music Review: Are you ready, ready, ready... ready to... Hit: 5 Stars
...Fly?
The follow up to the Dixie Chicks wildly successful "Wide Open Spaces," "Fly" swooped in and swept me away, easily becoming my all-time favorite Chicks album.
Off the gun, the Chicks get popping with "Ready to Run" and continue firing with the strength of "If I fall You're Going Down With Me." Slowing up the pace with yet another hit "Cowboy Take Me Away," the Chicks show their range, mesmerizing listeners with their wistful storytelling.
In a purely whimsical vein "Goodbye Earl" is a comic romp and a cautionary tale to all who would cross the Chicks. My advice: If you're evil, cook your own meals.
Rounding out the "Fly" hit parade is "Without You," a soulful, sad memorial to the end of yet another relationship.
Across this entire album, listeners are never far from a country hit. If you are looking for an introduction to great modern country, start here. "Fly" is the Dixie Chicks firing on all cylinders.
