Free Music Review: The Chicks Sounding Their Best

As more of a bluegrass fan than country, I had high expectatios for this album, and the chicks exceeded them. As the title indicates the Dixie Chicks have gone back to their roots with this one. Recorded in their home state of Texas this album lacks that Nashville influnce that can be heard on alot of todays country albums. The album gets of with a great start with the first single 'Long Time Gone' followed by a beutiful rendition of Stevie Nick's 'Landslide'. While every song on this album is good, the places where it really shines are 'White Trash Wedding', 'Tortured Tangled Hearts' and 'Lil Jack Slade' (With Chris Thile on Mandolin). These three cuts are straight ahead bluegrass, a term that is thrown around too often these days. On previous albums the chicks didn't really let lose on their instruments. However this one shows that they really can rip it up and pick with the best of them, such as former Kentucky Thunder member, Bryon Sutton who holds the guitar position. I recommend buying two copies, one for yourself and one for a friend, this album is great.
