Free Music Review: Lotsa mandolin and fiddle on third effort Hit: 4 StarsHaving settled their dispute with Sony Records, the Dixie Chicks finally got down to the business of recording their long-anticipated followup to Fly.From the opening banjo and fiddle and the folksy singing spicing up the first single and song "Long Time Gone", it's clear that the Dixie Chicks have shifted away from the pop flavouring of Fly and moved to something close to bluegrass. It's still danceable and engaging. They make a commentary on how soulless today's mainstream music is. "They got junior but they don't have hank" seems to be a punch at today's country. They next cover Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" and while satisfactory, Natalie Maines' full voice somewhat overstates the gentle lilting that Stevie Nicks gave the original. The banjo and mandolin give the old standard a fresh twist. "Travelin' Soldier" is the heartbreaking story of a soldier going off to Vietnam who forms a pen-pal relationship with a waitress until she gets the news that he died. Then comes the first of two Patty Griffin-penned tunes. The first is "Truth No. 2", which maintains the bluegrassy song but incorporates a bit of familiar country sound. "White Trash Wedding", with its short running time, galloping fiddle and mandolin and quickly-sung vocals, is analogous to Fly's "Sin Wagon". Why the wedding, too much "mattress dancing" from "Sin Wagon"? Just kidding. Things get mellower with the title track, which is something Alison Krauss could've done. "More Love" is a slow-paced song that without the bluegrass stylings could have belonged on Wide Open Spaces. Ditto for the next song, "I Believe In Love", which is a tempered ballad and which highlights the harmony vocals of the trio. Love that fiddle solo. Second favourite song here. It becomes hoe-down time with two songs. The first is "Tortured, Tangled Hearts", which demonstrates the fickleness of love. Quite a line: "With 'I love you' on a fresh tattoo engraved on his chest, she tore her name right off his heart." The predestined tragedy of the relationship is foretold with "It was a broken dream right from the start." The second is the instrumental "Lil Jack Slade", with a cool Chris Thile mandolin solo, which could belong on a Rednex album. Back to ballad time with Radney Foster's lullaby to a young boy, "Godspeed (Sweet Dreams)" whether he be dreaming about pirate adventures or Superman. Another favourite. Emmylou Harris contributes backing vocals here. The second Patty Griffin song, "Top Of The World", complete with an elegiac mid-song string arrangement, finishes the album, and is a sad song on the inability of a husband who's disappearing on the inside, unable to inspire anything in his wife: "She's never gonna fly to the top of the world." and "There's a whole lot of singing that's never gonna be heard." Which I hope won't be the case for the Dixie Chicks. Overall, a mellower effort with much of the outstanding tracks weighted towards the end.
Free Music Review: Great CD Hit: 5 StarsI've got all the Dixie Chicks CDs, and this one is great. The ballads mixed with the few bluegrassy pieces make for great listening. "Traveling Soldier" and "White Trash Wedding" are probably my two favorites.
Free Music Review: Dixie Chicks bring it on "Home" Hit: 5 StarsThe year of 2002 brought the return of the Dixie Chicks with their third studio album, "Home". This highly anticipated album brought a lot of baggage along, with the lawsuits between the Chicks and Sony Music, and the possibility the Chicks may not have a record label to release their music. Fortunately, the two sides worked out their differences, and the Chicks (Natalie Maines, Emily Robison, and Martie Maguire) have presented to us one of the best albums of this decade."Home" truly displays the talent of these three women, in respects to producing, writing, and performing. The harmonies the three bring to this album only reinforces the emotions held in every song. Everytime I listen to this album I am drawn into the melodies of each song, and am impressed at how well the Dixie Chicks have continued to evolve on each album. The highlights of this album are evident in "Travelin' Soldier", "Godspeed (Sweet Dreams)", and "Top of the World". These three songs alone make the listener focus intensely on the lyrics, the harmonies, and the melodies, that the listener is left to feel heartbreak after each one. However, the heartbreak the listener feels is so distinct from each song, and the Chicks make you feel that heartbreak moreso with their commanding vocals. It is extremely rare for artists to top their previous album efforts. The Dixie Chicks have so far accomplished this task twice (the first time with "Fly", and now with "Home"). This album is not only for die-hard fans of the Dixie Chicks; this is a must-own album for anyone who appreciates the hard work that is put into an album from any artist or band. "Home", as I mentioned previously, is one of the best albums of this decade. The Dixie Chicks have once again proven they are a driving force in the industry, and will continue to be in the future.
Free Music Review: Haunting Hit: 5 StarsNow, I'm not a big fan of country music. In fact, I avoid it whenever possible. But my best friend likes it, and she insisted that I listen to her latest CD, Home by the Dixie Chicks. To one song in particular, that she had found so good, but so sad, it had made her cry. And that song was Travelin' Soldier. And despite the fact that I considered country music to be one of the greatest evils created, Travelin' Soldier gave me goosebumps. It was such a sad, but touching song, it stuck in my head, and I found myself telling people to listen to it. Also other pleasureable songs on this CD are Landslide, Long Time Gone, Lil' Jack Slade, and many others. This is definitly a CD worth getting.
