Free Music Review: DMX ...And Then There Was X

DMX is one of the more hard-core rappers that's out right now. His East Coast beats and lyrics will capture any rap lovers ear when they listen to this CD. He is the only rapper to have two CD's come out in the same year that both went to number one. Those two are "It's Dark and Hell is Hot" and "Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood." He has four singles out right now off this CD that are hot. Those songs are "What's My Name?", "Party Up(up in here)", "What These B*****S Want?" , and "Good Girls, Bad Guys." I like all these songs. The song "What's My Name?" is to all the rappers and people who thought DMX was one of those "one hit wonders" but he's not. I like most of the songs on the CD, but some could be better, I think. This CD is hard-core rap from the East Side, even though I don't really like East Coast rap, I like this CD. Like I said before, the other CD's are "It's Dark and Hell is Hot" and "Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood." I have all these CD's and I like all of them even though some of the songs could be better. I know not every song can be a number one hit, but they still could be better. There are only two producers on this CD, and they are: Dee and Waah Dean. The two record labels he is on are Def Jam and Ruff Ryders. Some other well known rappers on the Ruff Ryders are The Lox and Eve. The People that make special appearances on this CD are: Sisqo, The Lox, Drag-On, Regina Bell, and Dyme. The release date of this CD was Dec. 21,1999 and I got this CD soon after that. Now that his underlyings, Ruff Ryders, have ridden his gravy train to Platinum City, DMX, less concerned with leading the Ruff Ryders to the financial promised land, is free to discover his own artistic Mecca. Through most established rap cats litter music media with follow-up album promises about as credible as infomercial testimonials ("I took it to the next level this time!"), DMX actually does progress as an artist here. X is that rare follow-up album that reveals more dimensions of the artist than the debut example, DMX is actually a good storyteller. The charging, chanting "ONE MORE ROAD TO CROSS" paints DMX's vivid heist account. "I got four people on the inside, one stay in the back, two stock boys, one at the register but he count the stacks." Earl Simmons' last albums cast him in perpetual struggle with the god and the devil inside as DMX and Damien, respectively. X grays this black-and-white conflict and we appreciate conflicts as more conplex than dichotomous. His images of futility and emptiness are nail bitting: "I'm robbin' cats just as broke as myself."
