Free Music Review: This is Dokken's "Beatles White Album"!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Where do I begin? This is the record Dokken fans have been begging for! Granted, I liked Hell To Pay, Long Way Home, and Erase the Slate but Lightning Strikes Again (LSA) is heads and tails a much more cohesive, stronger collection of songs. Well crafted, great lyrics (as usual for Dokken), and tasty licks and catchy riffs.
As usual, Dokken has a stand out album title and its almost ironic-they take the title from a song off of Under Lock & Key-an album Don has often referred to when asked what the sound of LSA would sound like. Could it serve as an ode to their past with this title? Regardless, the title, artwork, and -most importantly- the songs are fantastic. This, in my opinion, is Dokken's "Beatles White Album."
The only thing I would have LOVED to see here is a solo instrumental song, showcasing Jon Levin's wicked guitar skills. I think that as a sign of respect to Levin and an eye to Dokken's future, putting a guitar instrumental on the album would have been great addition. Perhaps next album.
Other than that, this is a gem and will be one of the best albums of 2008. LSA is a 5 star album that belongs in a class with Metallica's Black Album, Green Day's 'Warning', and Godsmack's 'Four.' These are all examples of outstanding records with no filler and Dokken certainly fills that category IMHO. Three words: Get This Record!!!

Is this 1989?? Let me begin by saying that I am a LONG TIME Dokken fan. I've seen them several times live and own their entire catalog. My opinion may be biased a bit because I want these guys to succeed in whatever they do. With that said...this is an AMAZING effort from a band that truly has NOTHING left to prove. The songs are great, the guitar work by Levin is spot-on Dokken, and the production is the best yet for this band. Don's voice is bit raspy in parts, but I like the change. He's kind of mellowed and become more gruff over the years. (Hey, you smoke 2 packs of Marlboro's a day for 30 years and see how you sing at 52) Do not for one second ignore the contribution by Jon Levin to this CD. He had a hand in writing most every song and Don himself says Levin kept him focused in writing this material. Levin now truly belongs in this band, and while I love Lynch, I do NOT miss him one bit on this body of work. There are talks of a Dokken reunion next year. Sure, I'd love to see the original line-up one more time before I die, but if having Lynch in the band results in another 'Shadowlife', I'll pass. Never stop ROKKEN!!

Amazing. It's 1985 again and I personally am LOVING IT. I'll never understand why it always takes so many stumbles for 80's metal bands to finally figure out that all their fans want is their REAL style. I personally loved Erase The Slate, and to me that was the closest thing to the REAL Dokken since Back For The Attack. A couple of stylistic changes later, and here we are back at the original sound, and WOW! This is a fantastic REAL Dokken record, start to finish, no question. Everything is in top form, right down to the packaging. Major kudos to these guys for just relaxing and doing what they do best in a 100% focused group effort. And Jon Levin's guitar playing, whilst reminiscent of George isn't in any way copying George. Don's vocals are top-notch here. Bursting with signature Dokken melodies and harmonics, I just can't say enough about this album and I'd rather not say any more for fear of spoiling it for anyone. Buy it, and let's hope for yet another of it's quality to follow! LONG LIVE DON DOKKEN!

Seriously, how many times have you heard the hype for a new album from a band that has not sounded like themselves in years? They always say that the band is going back to what made them famous in the first place. Well kids, here it is. This is classic Dokken sound with modern production. John Levin absolutely NAILS the Lynch tone and vibe. I am a Dokken purist and I can honestly say that this is possibly their very finest hour in the studio. You get Tooth and Nail meets Under Lock and Key...really! These are some of the best songs Don has writen and there's not a throwaway on the record. Highlights are "Oasis", "This Fire", "How I Miss Your Smile", and "Point of No Return". Thanks to the band for this album. It is a treasure in the Dokken discography.

Do yourself another favor and pickup Don's new solo album "Solitary".

Free Music Review: Dokken's best record?
Hit: 5 Stars

This record is easily as good, or even slightly better, than any record from Dokken's heyday (for me that is "Back For The Attack"). I especially think that the production far outshines their earlier albums. Don's voice has aged a bit and does sound a little ragged, but his tasteful phrasing and gorgeous melodies more than make up for any perceived roadwear. In fact, as a songwriter and a singer Don Dokken is better now than ever.

Although his tone and phrasing on this record are remarkably similar to George Lynch, Jon Levin is a terrific guitarist in his own right. His elegant playing is inspired and clever on every song. One may think of "Lightning Strikes Again" as the best record George Lynch never made...and, in my opinion, its definitely a better record than anything Lynch did outside of Dokken.
