Free Music Review: Even better than Grass is blue, Little sparrow

On this bluegrass album, four of the songs are covers. Bread's If is speeded up - Dolly does it mid-tempo, and it works very well done this way. I've heard several covers of If, but this is the first time I've heard a cover that didn't copy Bread. Stairway to Heaven is mind-blowing. Dolly changed this so much that she sent a tape to the writers to ask for their approval. They loved it !!!!!The other two covers are re-recordings of her own songs. Shattered image was originally done at breakneck speed but the new version is done at a more leisurely mid-tempo, and it is possibly my favorite track. What a heartache hasn't changed much, except to adapt it to bluegrass.
The other songs are all new and all written by Dolly. They are all brilliant, covering a variety of moods and topics, yet the whole album fits together well. You can read Dolly's own comments on the album in Duane Gordon's Dollymania website.
For me, this album may not quite match the best of Dolly's early 1970's music - but it comes very close, and that means it's better than any other current album.
