Free Music Notes for Halos & HornsFree Music Review: Dolly Would Do Better (to stay country) Hit: 3 StarsI consider Dolly Parton to be peerless in country music. Her recent bluegrass recordings attest to her solid musical qualities. Regrettably, "Halos and Horns" is a lackluster set of tunes that belittle Ms. Parton's artistry. Hopefully, whatever motivated her to accept this roster of songs has been satisfied, and her next CD, which I will most certainly purchase from Amazon.com, will witness her return to fine musicianship and powerful country communication.
Free Music Review: I was SOOOOO disappointed Hit: 2 StarsI'm a huge fan of Dolly's and absolutely loved both the Grass is Blue and Little Sparrow CD's. I looked forward to listening to this newest offering with great enthusiasm and was really crushed! First of all - What happened to the band? Where is Jerry Douglas? Allison Kraus? I thought many of the songs were silly and the arrangements were sappy. Darn.
Free Music Review: Great Music from a Great Artist Hit: 5 StarsDolly's CD of Halos and Horns is outstanding. The music takes you through Religion,Heartbreak, and Mystery. The lonesome mountain sounds that Dolly adds give you that heart warming feeling, and the excitement of the unknown. She definately will bring you to tears when she sings "Hello God". A song that she wrote after 9/11.
Free Music Review: Give Dolly a Halo! Hit: 5 StarsDolly just keeps getting better. Still one of the best songwriters in the industry, she has penned 12 of the 14 songs on this CD. So many wonderful songs with very complementary arrangements that enhance the whole dang sound of them. Sugar Hill, Halos & Horns and more. I expected not to like Stairway to Heaven, after hearing it too many times in the 70's, but she puts a whole new meaning to the song. If, the David Gates song, is wonderfully done in a classy-sounding bluegrass style. The Grass is Blue had been my favorite CD from Dolly to date, but now I'm not sure. Perhaps Halos & Horns is better. Enjoy ...
Free Music Review: Dolly rocks Hit: 4 StarsMy 20's-something kids thought Dolly's Stairway to Heaven was 'awesome' and so did I. This is an excellent CD, Dolly continues to turn out great work. Her old-crone singing in "These Old Bones" is great fun, particularly when she and the crone harmonize at the end. All in all, one that I'll be playing regularly as I do all her work.
