After a serious career lull in the mid '90's Dolly Parton suddenly found herself recognized as the artist that made a comeback with a series of bluegrass albums for the independent label Sugar Hill Records. Her three albums "Grass Is Blue", "Little Sparrow", and "Haloes and Horns" brought Dolly multiple Grammy wins, and suddenly Dolly was finally recognized as the talented artist she is. This CD "Live and Well" is an overview of her bluegrass career.
"Live and Well" was recorded on December 12th and 13th, 2002 after Dolly did her first major tour in the U.S. in over ten years. The tour was a complete sell-out, and this album has Dolly performing some of the lesser-known songs from her bluegrass albums, along with some of her biggest hits, done in a bluegrass manner. Hits like "9 to 5", "Jolene", and "Coat of Many Colors" are performed, and one of the best parts of the CD is the accapella version of "Islands in the Stream" and "Here You Come Again". The CD was recorded at Miss Parton's Celebrity Theatre at Dollywood. There is also a companion DVD of this concert as well.
"Live and Well" was not, however, a huge seller, only going as far as #22 country and #161 pop on the Billboard Charts.
In late 2009 Dolly will be releasing two new live CD's and DVD's of her 2008 European concert on her own Dolly Records label.

This LP is a rare gem among the country genre. Parton's voice is angelic as is her delivery of these great tunes. Given that Parton has been established for decades, the fact that she composes these gloriously melodic songs is enough to garner this LP 5 stars. As a rule, the LIVE recordings leave so much to be desired in the quality department: Not here. Very impressive music and sound. Parton's voice is NOT over powered in these selections. Parton and all the musicians on this LP are to be thanked for a job well done. Seems so effortless, I'm certain it is not.
