Free Music Notes for Ultimate Dolly Parton

Free Music Review: Ultimate? Hardly!
Hit: 1 Stars

So redundant and unremarkable is this Dolly Parton collection it is worth noting that Amazon.com does not even bother to provide a track listing. I have seen a track listing and believe me there is absolutely NOTHING here that hasn't been available for years and the literally dozens of other compilations that RCA puts out on what has become an annual basis.

In fact, last year RCA released the Dolly Parton compilation "RCA Country Legends," a 16 track collection. Fully half of the twenty songs on the so called "Ultimate Dolly Parton" were on "Legends." The other 10 songs here are readily available on other compilations making this not "The Ultimate Dolly Parton" but "The Redundant Dolly Parton." Even the songs here from Dolly's pre-pop phase -- gems like "Jolene," "Joshua," and the always spectacular "Coat of Many Colors" have been collected to death and the fact that this collection once again puts much more emphasis on Parton's pop career ("Here You Come Again," "9 to 5," "Islands in the Stream," etc.) at the expense of her far more compelling and, these days, hard to find country songs (why is the original version of "Down From Dover" not available on any in print Dolly Parton collection, while the aforementioned pop songs are on dozens?) shows once again that RCA is more interested in endless compilations of generic pop songs than reminding the world of why Parton was considered one of the most prolific and talented country music artists of either gender. Ultimate? Not even close.

For those who care, the track listing is as follows:

1.?Joshua 2. Coat of Many Colors 3.?Jolene 4.I Will Always Love You 5. Please Don't Stop Loving You / Porter Wagoner 6.?Love Is Like a Butterfly 7.?The Bargain Store 8.?Here You Come Again 9.?It's All Wrong, But It's All Right 10.?Heartbreaker 11.?I Really Got the Feeling 12.?You're the Only One 13.?Starting Over Again 14.?Old Flames Can't Hold a Candle to You 15.?9 to 5 16.?But You Know I Love You 17.?Tennessee Homesick Blues 18.?Islands in the Stream 19.?To Know Him Is to Love Him 20.?Why'd You Come in Here Lookin' Like That

Free Music Review: Yawn. Same Old, Same Old.
Hit: 1 Stars

I have to agree with the previous one star review -- just what is the deal with all these repackaged compilations of Dolly Parton that simply recycle the same songs? So redundant is this latest "hits" package that Amazon does not even bother to list the songs on it. I've seen a track listing and trust me there is absolutely NOTHING new here. If you prefer Parton before she went pop in 1977 there is little here to satisfy you and if you prefer Parton after she went pop you no doubt already have all these songs on one of the previous four billion compilations RCA has released on what has pretty much become an annual basis. Either way there is NOTHING "ultimate" about this product and either way you don't need it. Skip this one by.

Free Music Review: UNCLE!
Hit: 1 Stars

The contempt that RCA/BMG has for Dolly Parton fans is shown yet again in this utterly pointless compilation that does absolutely nothing but repackage the same songs the company has been compiling over and over and over and over again.

Every one of the twenty songs contained on this latest RCA/BMG product (which comes only one year after the release of the "Country Legends" package that had most of these same songs) is available on dozens other compilations that the label has been releasing over the past 10-15 years while literally hundreds of Parton's songs gather dust in the vaults. An Australian label issued a compilation of Dolly's pre-1977 pop tracks, while the European arm of RCA/BMG has issued CD's with not one, but TWO of Dolly's country albums on one disc (one contains "Joshua" and "Coat of Many Colors" the other "My Tennessee Mountain Home" and "Jolene" -- each comes with impressive remastered sound and new liner notes). Apparently the American arm of the label is either too lazy to do something similar or has been lulled into complacency by an American public who keeps buying the same songs over and over again.

It is time to rise up and demand that RCA/BMG treats the back Parton catalogue with the respect that it deserves. The only way to get the message across to the label is to cease buying this redundant compilations. Otherwise you can look forward to yet ANOTHER compilation with "Here You Come Again," "9 to 5," "I Will Always Love You," "Islands in the Stream" etc. at the expense of far more compelling material. And let's face it. Just how many more of those do you REALLY need?

Free Music Review: Wonderful - And I'm not a Dolly Fan
Hit: 4 Stars

The Lady has put together some of her best songs over the last 30 years on one CD. The pnotos alone are worth the cost of the CD. I can't help it; Dolly can tug at my heart like few other singers (even with her annoying put on twang).

Free Music Review: Another Dolly Collection
Hit: 5 Stars

Someone finally did a decent job. That is besides the ESSENTIAL DOLLY PARTON albums, which were also good. Dolly helped hand pick these songs, from her RCA and Columbia albums. It's hard to fit all her hits on one CD but this one has a generous helping of 20 tracks. Sure a lot of these are available on other collections, but there is a good balance of older and newer songs on this one. Starting as early as "Joshua" all the way to the late 80s with "Why'd You Come In Here Lookin Like That". It's not perfect but knowing that Dolly approves of this collection makes it somewhat more important than the others, knowing that she had her hand in picking some of the tracks. Classic songs include "Coat Of Many Colors", "I Really Got The Feeling", "But You Know I Love You", "9 to 5", "Heartbreaker", "I Will Always Love You", "To Know Him Is To Love Him", "Love Is Like A Butterfly", "You're The Only One" and many many more. Excellent collection for new fans and old ones.
