What a fantastic album. I've loved particular songs from Ron Sexsmith's other albums, but never really loved any of his albums as a whole - just too many songs built around a cliched turn of phrase and/or arrangements that sound a little too safe. This album is different. I've listened to it probably 50 or 60 times, and it's really holding up. It may even be headed for a spot on my very short "never-get-sick-of-these-albums" list (Bruce Molsky's Big Hoedown, the Holy Modal Rounders' Too Much Fun, Yo La Tengo's Fakebook, the Minutemen's Double Nickels, and a few more). At their best, the lyrics are thought-provoking and evocative, and even the middling lyrics are good enough that they don't get in the way of enjoying the song. Don Kerr's spot-on harmonies and the adventurous arrangements give the album a really distinctive stamp. And the songs as a whole are all really first rate. (Even though Ron wrote all of them, I really shouldn't call this a Ron Sexsmith album, as it seems to be a true collaboration between Sexsmith and Kerr that has brought out the best in both musicians.) I saw Ron and his band in Birmingham last year, and was surprised when, in response to a request for "Tree Lined Street", he apologized and said that the band didn't know or play any songs from that album. Understandable in a way, since Kerr is such an essential part of what makes these songs great, but I'd hate to see Ron completely leave these songs off his live set list. (True to his generous nature, Ron decided later in the set to take a shot at "Listen", apparently leading the band through a song they didn't really know. It sounded great.) Anyway - many thanks to Ron and Don for this unique and beautiful collection of songs.

Destination Unknown is a seriously stunning release, offering a welcome 21st century answer to the Everly Brothers. Together, with Ron's band, the two have toured the world, sharing the stage with the likes of Coldplay and Elvis Costello, who along with Paul McCartney and many others, count themselves among Ron's fans. Sexsmith & Kerr's camaraderie is showcased with the lilting, gorgeous harmonies of Destination Unknown. Ronboys. 2005.The debut release by this Canadian duo could easily have been billed as the latest from Ron Sexsmith, who writes all the material here and sings all the leads. Yet the harmonies of producer Don Kerr, a frequent Sexsmith sideman, are more than background vocals, as the two strive for a brotherly blend reminiscent of the Everlys and the Louvins. The arrangements are largely acoustic, the melodies often folkish, from the mandolin-driven "Listen" that opens the CD through the country strains of "Reacquainted." Poppier fare such as the dreamy "Chasing Forever" and "Counting on Time" pay homage to the brothers Davies of the Kinks, whose reveries of sunny days and village greens find kindred spirits here. Few can match Sexsmith for melancholy, and the lovesick "Only Me" reflects his bittersweet best. --Don McLeese
