Free Music Review: A showcase for Menza's big band arrangements

Menza turned 70 the year this recording was made (2006), and his talents continue to amaze. All nine tracks in this collection are his arrangements, and five of them are his original tunes. As always, he keeps life interesting for the sax section (check out the sax soli in the swinging "Shuffle Brothers") but also keeps the rest of the band well engaged. Menza's excellent ensemble writing is well executed by the German ensemble, the SWR Big Band.
Menza is only credited with two solos. The first is in "Voyage," which is arranged in Four Brothers style - three tenors and bari. The other solo is in the fast samba that closes the album, "Sambiana." Although it's not credited in the notes, Menza undoubtedly plays the tenor solo in the intro to "Where Are You?" a beautiful flugelhorn feature for Don Rader. Though his solos are few, they're definitely the powerful, articulate Menza sound we've come to know and love.
Other highlights: The album opens with the driving back-beat of "Rebel Rousers," which is followed by a swinger called "Another Who?" The alto sax ballad feature "Royal" is a tribute to Basie saxophonist Marshall Royal. "Emily" is a nice ballad featuring trombone, and trombone is again in the spotlight (along with flute) in a light latin-style version of "If I Only Had a Brain."
This is an all-around great album of contemporary big band music, and it includes flashes of saxophone brilliance as well. Whichever you're looking for, this is a great choice.
