Admittedly Joan Sutherland has an outstanding vocal instrument. But she thinks -- apparently -- that words are unimportant. In her determined pursuit of "round pear shaped tones," she sounds like she is singing around a hot potato in her mouth. If this is of no consequence to you, then this is the definitive recording. The rest of the production is truly exceptional. Pavarotti, in particular, is in very fine voice.
