Free Music Review: Artistic Freedom Reigns on "Crayons"!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is Donna back and in full, dazzling effect! She once again kicks down the doors of artistic repression and makes no apologies for it! Donna has not sounded so joyous, emotive, and inspired on record in a long time! Her recent singles such as "You're So Beautiful", "I Got Your Love", among a few others before this album release prove this. While they are enjoyable, vocally she does not sound as enthuiastic in those recording as she does here. This is an album of Popular songs ranging from Pop/R&B, Pop/Rock, to Reggae, Samba, Vocal House, and Adult Contemporary. Donna does not disappoint with her tour de force vocal performances and well written songs, the majority of which she has had a large part in writing! I am in concurrance with other reviewers that she this is a experimentational album that works. She picked where the criminally overlooked "I'm A Rainbow" album left off. Donna's voice is such a pleasure to listen to because one can hear the enthuiaism and clarity! One of my favourites worth praise is "Bring Down The Reign." It is a wonderfully produced and written that is a song of social commentary. It is powerful without being preachy. Other songs on "Crayons" I enjoy are "Science Of Love", "Driving Down Brazil", "The Queen Is Back", "Slide Over Backwards", the title track "Crayons." The albums' singles, "I'm A Fire", "Stamp Your Feet", "Sand On My Feet" (an Adult Contemporary chart hit peaking at #30), "It's Only Love" (issued as in the U.S. only) and "Fame (The Game)" are among the best on the album. Overall, a thrilling, moving, musical journey! It is one I will not forget! I sincerely hope Donna has more albums in works because it has been far to long that we have not experienced her unique approach to song!!! An A list album worthy of being included in your music collection!

Free Music Review: A perfect SUMMER for the season and the year!
Hit: 5 Stars

Even though we're at the halfway point of the year, 2008 may go down as "The Year of the Boomer," what with major releases from "seniors" like Madonna, Sergio Mendes, Al Green, Dolly Parton and septuagenarian Dame Shirley Bassey, all being well-received by critics and fans alike.

To the fray we can now add Donna Summer with "Crayons," a welcome addition to the singer's discography of hits and an ear-friendly hodgepodge for those of us that have loved the singer since "Love to Love You Baby" hit the airwaves three decades ago.

The new release, featuring twelve songs co-written by Summer and a variety of songwriters, allows the singer to poke fun at herself and celebrity ("The Queen is Back" and "Fame-the Game"), as well as hurl herself headlong into contemporary dance grooves with tunes like the tile cut and "Mr. Music." Summer gets a little nostalgic with the retro-disco sound on "I'm a Fire," waxes country with "Slide Over Backwards," and plays with a South American sound with "Drivin' Down Brazil."

The slower, mid-tempo numbers are just as good. "Sand on My Feet," "Science of Love," "Be Myself Again," and "Bring Down the Reign" allow Summer to show her softer yet highly effective vocals, something that she occasionally did on such classics as her concept "Bad Girls" and "Once Upon a Time" albums from the 70's.

Though some may call "Crayons" a comeback, I prefer to think of it as a "rebirth" to her minions of fans worldwide, as well as an "introduction" to the younger listeners that weren't fortunate to have experienced the "Queen of Disco" in her heyday.

Either way, both audiophiles will be pleased with this FIVE-STAR recording.

Free Music Review: Crayons - THE Quintessential Comeback of 2008
Hit: 5 Stars

Step aside Madonna, Mariah, this album is just as good if not better than Janet's Discipline, the best album of this year alongside Crayons.

After 17 years, she's back!!! I am listening to the album for the tenth time today. It leaked this morning, and it's a great thing it did!! The album is wonderful mix of dance, R&B, pop, with Latin, Jamaican and African touches, as well as a feel of gospel/church music.

"Stamp Your Feet" starts the album, a great, positive, uplifting track that makes you move. "Mr. Music" shows that Summer is with current trends, still shaking it at 59, and that she has an iPod. The track featuring Ziggy Marley is called "Crayons" and is a hot beat with an island twist. Summer even tries on the accent but actually has success unlike Mariah Carey who attempted the same on her recent record "E=MC2".

"Fame (The Game)" talks of the pros and cons of Hollywood life, with a cool vocal style. Highlights on the album would have to be "Sand On My Feet", a heartfelt love song, and the rock-tinged "Science Of Love". "Bring Down The Reign" has an interesting tribal chant inserted, which helps to finish off the album. It's a great song, keeping in line with the "Queen" theme of the album.

Overall, the effort is an admirable one. Summer comes back after 17 years with contemporary production while remaining true to her roots. It's the disco queen modified for the present. And it works. Make sure to pick up your copy on May 20th in the States, and June 23rd in the UK.

6/5

Free Music Review: The Summer of 2008 will be a HOT ONE !
Hit: 5 Stars

I've always been a big Donna Summer fan but was quite afraid of the new album Crayons. After 17 years of absence from the music scene with a complete full length album, one might expect too much from an artist who's been around for four decades (70s-80s-90s-2000s...). The industry seemed to want Donna Summer to come out with a 'standards' album (as Rod Stewart and many other artists did with great success) but the 'Dance Diva' seemed to know better. She surrounded herself with young writers-composers-producers to create what I consider the perfect album for the summer of 2008 ! All tracks are surprisingly uplifting and current coming from a pop artist who will soon be 60 years old (might we remind ourselves). Donna Summer is in her own right the 'Queen of Dance' and she is quite back in fact as one of the songs suggests 'The Queen is Back' with nothing to prove and yet with everything to reaffirm ! With this album, we find a classic soulful and stronger than ever voice who sings along with the sounds of today, and you know what ? It feels really good to feel like time hasn't passed... Donna Summer delivers more than what I expected. She found a way to be true to herself while stepping into the 21st century with a new sound. My summer of 2008 will be a memorable one thanks to Donna ! And now I secretly wish she would come out with a new album every year from now on to always accompany my future summers... An album to listen to with sunshine in the face and wind in the hair ! Thank you Ms Summer for coming back !

Free Music Review: It's been TOO Long!
Hit: 5 Stars

I found out about this new CD (her first in 17 years!) by accident. I ordered it...and have just about worn it out already. There are 12 tracks on this CD, and I enjoyed every one of them--something that is very rare for the garbage that is being released under the guise of music these days.

The CD starts off with four upbeat (and very danceable) tunes: Stamp Your Feet, Mr. Music, Crayons, and The Queen is Back. The Queen is Back is Donna's self-parody. I did a little reading about this CD, and she was actually reluctant to entitle this tune this name because she thought that was being too snooty! The one torch song on here is "Be Myself Again." It's words are haunting. "You can have all these hopes and dreams. The ones I can't use anymore." The last song, "Bring Down the Reign," moved me to tears. Although not pinpointed as to exactly what "reign" she's singing about, I think it would be safe to say Darfur and Rawanda leap to mind.

Ms. Summer wrote (or co-wrote) all these songs, as she did when she first began recording way-back-when. That takes talent, my friends. She doesn't have to be "over produced" because she can sing. My friends used to (well, they still do) kid me about a statement I made about her. I always said that if angels DO exist and they have a singing voice, it will sound like Ms. Summer's. Her pipes have not lost any of their power and I, for one, am glad the Queen is back!

Highly recommended.
