Free Music Notes for Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1992 Canadian Cast)

Free Music Review: I love this CD - If you don't read on this might help
Hit: 5 Stars

I LOVE THIS CD MORE THAN ANYTHING!!! I hear the songs and I am taken back to 1997 when I got to be up on stage in Joseph performing at the Elgin Theatre. I can visualize the movements and sets and cast. I remember what it was like to be performing to an audience of over a thousand people. I remember our rehearsals and all the amazing things that happened to me over the 5 months I was in Joseph. The funny, happy and sad moments. There is nothing like it.

This CD is for anyone who has seen the production live, or who wants to feel and hear what Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is.

I miss the show!

There are two things I didn't like about this CD:

1. It didn't include the entre-act (the kids sang it) - This is probably due to the fact CDs can only hold so many minutes - that probably would have put them over.

2. I wish the song "Any Dream Will Do" (number 2) wasn't the pop (single) version - if they wanted to include that they could have put it at the end as a bonus track or something.

Finally: I read in a review that someone didn't like this CD because the kids parts sounded like there were teenagers mixed in. To that I say DUH!!! For those of you who have only seen the video - the kids aren't supposed to be a bunch of 5 year olds!!! In the live production there were 46 kids ranging in age from 8-16 (maybe 17) So don't be ingorant!!! JEEZZ!!!
AND
to settle the score, Janet does have a somewhat pitchy voice, but the narrator from the video completely sucks!!! The video sucks!! I know, trust me!!! You people who think you know what Joseph is are really starting to piss me off, because you don't! Go see the show LIVE and then you can say something about it, untill then shut your yap and stop being ingorant!!!!

The two narrators who were in the show during 1997 are the best I've heard!!!

Free Music Review: "Joseph" Review -- Narrator Critic
Hit: 5 Stars

I must say, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has been apart of my life for the past 10 years. My fascination with the production began when I was in grade 11. My school put on our own production of "Joseph" where I played the role of the narrator. Ever since then I have fallen in love with the show. Since that time, I have seen EVERY production that has come to Toronto (where I live) and I have heard a number of different versions of the soundtrack.

I feel that Donny Osmond's portrayal of Joseph is a definite "ten out of ten"!! He truly is amazing in that role. The Narrator (I have a special place for this role in my heart --> since I was the narrator in high school)is best played by Janet Metz, although Deborah Gibson (aka: Debbie Gibson --> 1980's teen pop star) comes VERY VERY VERY close for first place in my mind. Deborah recently played the narrator in the production of Joseph that ran from June 1999 - February 2000 that travelled to various cities in North America. Patrick Cassidy played Joseph in this tour group.

I also have the "Joseph" video. Maria Friedman does an alright job as the narrator however she could learn a thing or two from Janet Metz and Deborah Gibson. Maria does not come across as someone who truly embrasses the role as have previous narrators.

With respect to the soundtracks: Canadian Cast 1992: Very Good London Cast 1993: Good American Cast 1993: Very Good (although Michael Damian is NOT as good as Donny Osmond)

Overall, I feel that thsi performance is truly outstanding and I can't wait for the next time it returns to Toronto!!!

Free Music Review: Best Broadway Soundtrack after Phantom of the Opera
Hit: 5 Stars

This and the Phantom of the Opera are two of my all time favorite Broadway Soundtracks. I've owned the Phantom one for over ten years, and this one for only about two and I've already outplayed the Phantom one by at least 2-1! This CD is so good, it's almost addictive (if you'll excuse the analogy, Donny)!

This CD is incredible, and Donny Osmond IS Joseph. Nobody can out-act or out-sing him in the role I think he was born to play -- Joseph! I've listened to the other Joseph soundtracks and they are just absolutely horrid. The pacing is off, and there is no "life" to the singing or music. This one got it right, with excellent casting, and perfect musical arrangements. To say that this one outshines all the other Joseph soundtracks would be a gross understatement! If you only get one of the Joseph soundtracks, this is the one you want to get.

The pacing, orchestration and singing are all incredibly well done. I think this is better than the soundtrack from the DVD, which is really good, but this Broadway soundtrack simply outdoes it in every way. This CD is one that the entire family will enjoy and will play over and over again.

If you love Broadway shows, get this CD.
If you've never even seen Joseph and the Amazing Techicolor Dreamcoat...get THIS CD! You will NOT regret it one bit! Good thing that you can't wear out CD's!!

Free Music Review: Full of Fun and Laughs
Hit: 5 Stars

This recording of Joseph really puts a smile on your face. Vocals are strong and the words are clear. The cover makes sure to mention that Donny Osmond is starring, but my vote for best vocals would go to Janet Metz as Narrator. One of the things that I appreciated most was the different styles that the songs have: Calypso beat, Egyptian-themed, French accents! and of course Elvis-style (for Pharoah's Dream). That could be a plus or a minus, depending on the way you look at it. Originally I was expecting to hear some of the songs more straight-up (without the accents, etc.) so it took some getting used to. However, you will appreciate the style; even when the theme is sung over and over again, it does not feel repetitive. One note of warning, however: If you're not familiar with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and are looking at it as the "Bible" version, be aware that it does not mention God or faith or even make clear the innocence of Joseph in the incident with Potiphar's wife. But it's a great CD nonetheless, great to listen to and fun to sing along to.

Free Music Review: Osmond shines in Canada's "Joseph"
Hit: 5 Stars

I have to admit, I purchased the CD of this version of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" mainly out of curiosity over Donny Osmond's performance as Joseph. Well, he is superb. His voice is clear and strong, and he delivers outstanding renditions of the character's songs. The rest of the cast in this, the 1992 Canadian version of this musical play, also does a fine job.

"Joseph," with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, is a consistently entertaining CD. The lyrics re-tell the story of the biblical patriarch Joseph (found in Genesis 37-45), and Rice sticks remarkably close to the source material. "Joseph" has many inventive and humorous touches (such as making the Pharaoh sing his part a la Elvis Presley, or having Joseph's brothers break out into a calypso song).

"Joseph" works because of its combination of a compelling story, clever lyrics, and superb music. If you have heard other CD versions but have not listened to this one, check it out.
