Free Music Notes for Love Songs of the '70sFree Music Review: Wow!! Hit: 5 Stars
Anyone that knows me well knows that I am a huge fan of Donny Osmond. Osmond, much like Asschowder, has an ability to take song written by average people and turn them into something worthwhile. He not only makes these songs better than the originals, he embarrasses the original artist to the point where they are no longer allowed to perform them live. We do the same thing to any cover we do. We do a version of People are People that pretty much made Depeche Mode stop performing the song for a period of 7 months. Osmond does the same thing to all of these so called "good songs" of the 70s. My favorite is obviously "Mandy". Manilow is freaking genius, but Osmond takes a Manilow song, rolls it in cornmeal batter, fries it up and eats it while Manilow is stading there with a big wet spot on the front of his pants.
I remember one time where we played Hastings and decided we were going to cover "What's on your mind (pure energy). Information society was there working the concession stand and Burns kicks into the keyboard solo at the beginning. J-Abs was playing flawless guitar and Kroll was cranking up his amplified washboard. I came running onto the stage in a full sprint and tackled a cardboard cutout of My Dad's old boss. I stood up, grabbed the mic and screamed PURE ENERGY!!!! The crowd went nuts and started throwing fruit cups at each other. It was out of control, but so in control. Probably the greatest night Hastings has ever seen.
The crowd was standing room only that night, which meant average stayed home and played D & D with Ryan Seacrest.

I grew up about the same time as Donny Osmond, I thought that he was so uncool, I liked the J-5, and I thought Michael was so cool. It's funny how things turn out. MJ left his religious affiliation to further his career, and it worked, DO didn't and his career died. In the Mid 80's I was working as a corporate sales manager for a wholesale/ retail company that had our show case store in Orem Utah, and I used to run into Mr. Osmond, and one of his kids on occasion, he looked angry and bitter, unless he was looking at his child and then he looked peaceful. I didn't know him, I didn't talk to him I just observed. Over the years, we have learned both what a freak MJ is and some of the difficulties that DO went through.
But all that is beside the point of this review, this is a very, very good album of covers of ballads, from a decade of very good ballads, except in that we don't always know about people, and so judging music on what we think about someone's coolness might be counterproductive. More to the point, Donny's voice is a finely crafted instrument on the whole CD.
So if you are a DO fan, get this CD and see how well this artist has matured.
If you are not a DO fan, forget who is on the cover, and give it a try anyway, these are excellent vocals on excellent songs.
If you want a very nice CD of love songs, which have been interpreted in an excellent fashion, you will be amazed as soon as you put this CD in your deck!
Free Music Review: Just Beautiful!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I just received this album which I purchased through Amazon. I absolutely love it. I love his renditions of the songs. He put his own spin to these songs and his renditions are either superior or equal to the originals.
I have always hated the song "When I Need You" regardless of who sings it but Donny actually made me love the song. It sounds terrific now.
Donny Osmond is timeless. I have enjoyed listening to his songs and his voice through the years and I know many others have too and we will most certainly continue enjoy litening to them.
His talent and his ability as a musician cannot be disputed. I mean how many musicians do you know can play as many instruments as Donny Osmond can? He plays 26 instruments - fluently. Donny Osmond is a musician in all sense of the word!!!
There are some here who are accusing Donny of ripping customers off. Well, I do not feel ripped off.
Donny didn't make this album to rip anyone off. Doony Osmond recorded this album because:
- he is a musician,
- he is a recording artist, and
- he did it for his fans.
Donny, keep your albums coming. I love you as a singer, a musician, but most of all I love you as a person who has never gone "Hollywood" through your years of fame and I salute you for that.
Free Music Review: An underappreciated voice! Hit: 5 Stars
Initially I was not happy Donny chose to remake 70's classic love songs as I was hoping for some new material like he wrote and performed in his previous CD, "What I Meant to Say," but his vocal stylings and interpretations breathe fresh air into these songs. And I cannot imagine a better person for bringing back 70's music.
"Laughter in the Rain" is a song that does not sound dated, and Donny's vocals have a nice, warm feeling that illicit memories of walking "hand-in-hand with the one I love." I wish it would be released as a single because the song is much better than some of the crap that "adult contemporary" radio stations are playing these days. I suspect because of his former teen idol image, many radio stations don't play Donny's new songs and that is a shame as he is an underappreciated singer with a soulful voice. Maybe if he quits doing TV game shows and the like, he will be taken more seriously by the radio industry.
Check out, "Will It Go Round in Circle," a funky remake of the Billy Preston hit; Osmond gives it a nice funky flair with a different tone to his voice. Many would be surprised to hear this song because of Donny's former image, but he works the r & b, funk groove well and needs to do more songs like this one instead of so many ballads. Yeah, "Play That Funky Music White Boy!"
