I originally bought the single album "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" and it was my favorite album. When the local store started carrying "A Gift..." I conned a friend to trade an Animals record for my "Wear Your Love..." album and bought "A Gift...".

This was one of my all-time favorite albums of the late-60s. From what I understand, it was the first Rock album Box Set. The packaging is beautiful and contains a nice set of prints with drawings and the lyrics to all the songs on the second album. I still have those prints/lyrics, carefully preserved!

As I mentioned, the set was originally broken up into two albums, "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" and "For Little Ones". I believe the record company was afraid the double album would not sell as well, and were subsequently proved wrong.

In any case, the basic premise is that "Wear your Love..." was for adults and "Little Ones" was for children. But, in fact, some of the songs on "Wear Your Love..." (e.g. "Oh Gosh", "Someone Singing") could easily be viewed as children's songs, and some songs on "Little Ones" (e.g. "Enchanted Gypsy", "Voyage Into the Golden Screen", "Isle of Islay") could have been included on the "adult" album.

I would say the first album is a bit more electric and psychedelic, whereas the second album is more acoustic (i.e. "unplugged" in modern parlance).

A good example of the "unplugged" sound of the second album would be "Song of the Naturalists Wife" with a simple banjo accompaniment.

This box set quickly became my favorite album at the time. However, after moving into more Jazz-fusion and Prog rock in the 1970s, I gradually stopped listening to this.

Recently I began digitalizing my old vinyl albums. When I recorded these albums, I realized how much I missed listening to this. The music is so fresh and innocent. Listening to it is like a refreshing breath of cool ocean breeze.

However, the old vinyl was filled with skips and pops which were a large detraction. So this was the first of the vinyl albums that I felt compelled to get a new CD of.

Given how old this album is, it would have been nice if they had included some alternate takes, bonus tracks etc. However, I still feel it was worth every penny just to get a pristine new digital version of this truly unique and wonderful box set.

Originally packaged in a two-record box set with an expensively printed set of lyric sheets, A Gift was sincerely meant as a possible present for the hippie who has everything. The first album is the Wear Your Love Like Heaven album and it's a gem of mid-'60s Mickie Most-produced psychedelic pop. The title track and "Mad John's Escape" are prime pop, but "Little Boy in Corduroy" is the type of weird, childlike folk song that is featured throughout the second album. Titles such as "Song of the Naturalist's Wife," "Voyage into the Golden Screen," and "Widow with Shawl (a portrait)" give a clear idea of how "out there" Donovan went. --Rob O'Connor
