Free Music Notes for Essential Rarities

Free Music Review: Hello, I Love You
Hit: 5 Stars

I started listening to this band in 1998 and I've been hooked ever since. My feading frenzy reached a crescendo in 2003 when I finally owned all their studio albums and a few live ones. One additional item I was very pleased to discover is this release - Essential Rarities.

This collection is filled with live, demo, and alternate versions. I particularly enjoyed the demos of Hyacinth House, Moonlight Drive, and Hello I love you. Whether the demos sound as good as the originals is of course debatable. It is nonetheless refreshing to get to hear a different version of a familiar classic.

I always love concert/stage versions of Doors music and in this CD you get the live versions of Break on Through, Roadhouse Blues, The Soft Parade, Someday Soon, and The End.

Any Doors' fans who need a break from the studio classics should give Essential Rarities a try for a nice alternate refreshment.

Free Music Review: Definitely Essential For Doors Fans
Hit: 5 Stars

If you're a diehard Doors fan who didn't already purchase this CD along with "The Doors" box set, then chances are you will thoroughly enjoy "Essential Rarities," a superb collection of Doors demos, outtakes, and live recordings. On this disc you'll find such gems as the excellent "Soft Parade" leftover "Who Scared You" (which rightfully deserved to be included on that album), the drunken-bar tale of "Whiskey, Mystics And Men," the early 1965 demo of "Moonlight Drive" (with it's lighter vibe and Jim Morrison's softer vocal treatment), the cocktail-lounge alternate version of "Queen Of The Highway," the lovely "Orange County Suite," and the band's scorching live performances of "The Soft Parade" and "The End." I suppose casual listeners don't really need this album, but for the most faithful followers of The Doors, "Essential Rarities" is VERY essential stuff, no question about it.

Free Music Review: Best Doors Album
Hit: 5 Stars

In my opinion the BEST DOORS ALBUM. The box set was kind of a let down for me. This collection has just a perfect flow to it. It just works for me. It sounds so heartfelt and despite one or two muffled recordings, I feel it really captures the heart of the Doors. When the acid freaks realize that no one is tending the light at the end of the tunnel, that happiness cannot be bought with a $3 tab of acid, the psychedelic blues, the existential dread (paraphrasing here from Hunter S. Thompson and Stephen Davis)this album is the Doors that i like best, its harsh, its not overproduced. They seem to really enjoy playing these songs. of course the box set and even boot yer butt have some great moments, but for me anyways, these recordings, all on just one disc, are essential!

Free Music Review: Raw work in awesome album
Hit: 5 Stars

WOW! This is a great album, period. For any one who is a true Doors fan, this truly is essential. It is great to hear the demo's of songs such as "Hyacinth House" which was recorded at Robby's own house, it's great. Or then there's the muffled "Someday Soon" from the Isle of Wight Festival, I listen to that over and over. After this, we are taken to the true epics, Orange County Sweet, The Soft Parade (live, a rare one, and a masterpiece), and then, to the epitome- The End. Wow, I am glad I picked up this album, it really gives a true Doors fan some material that they have not heard yet and a slightly differant picture on their work (like hearing Jim's voice live, rather than in a studio). You must get this!
