Free Music Review: The Doors Essential Rarities
Hit: 5 Stars

This is an excellent CD by the Doors to have in your Collection,it sounds great and all the songs are really cool also.

Free Music Review: Must for a true Doors fan
Hit: 4 Stars

A great album. The only real downside is that if you own the box set you are only getting one new song (woman is a devil). Although it is a good song, it is not worth buying this whole album unless you are a Doors freak. A few of the songs are some of the demos that the band passed around to record companys before Electra signed them, and the recording quality on these are poor. It does feature great versions of already released songs though. "Moonlight Drive (sunset sound version)" is pretty good, and "The Hyacinth House" is excellent. "Who Scared You" and "Whiskey, Mystics, and Men" ,2 songs that were previously unreleased on albums (but part of the box set), are what really make this a great record. Overall, if you are a Doors fan this is a must have. Be warned: if the only Doors songs you know of are "Light my Fire" and "Break on Through", this album isn't for you.

Since the Doors had such a short career, it seems that everything ever recorded has been put on the market - repeatedly. The publisher is trying to milk this cow to death.

Essential Rarities contains a collection of live songs by the Doors, some of which are in fact actually rare in that they were not performed/recorded often but they HAVE be released before. This is a subset of the 97 Box Set, which is a collection of previously released pieces, which ...

I found Break On Through, Roadhouse Blues, I will Never be Untrue and The End to be VERY good. The rest, I could take or leave. They all have value though for the hardcore fan who wants to hear the Doors in various 'live' or 'demo' settings. In some cases, that may be the only value. If you just want these tracks and not buy the Boxed Set, it is cheaper to buy this CD.

Free Music Review: Hidden Gems From The Doors
Hit: 4 Stars

For those who do not have the four-CD Doors box set, "Essential Rarities" is a fine alternative. With the exception of "Who Scared You?" (which should have been included on "The Soft Parade" album), all the tracks are previously unreleased. Admittedly, Jim Morrison's lyrics sometimes evolved into Bad Poetry, yet The Doors were a tight band. Had Morrison lived, the quartet would have been a blues powerhouse - evident in masterful concert renditions of "Roadhouse Blues" and "Break On Through." The group's 1969 live performance of "The Soft Parade" far surpasses the studio track, while "Orange County Suite" conveys a haunting, melancholy tone. Unlike "The Beatles Anthology," there are no revisionist remixes in this long-overdue collection. If you enjoy "Essential Rarities," you may want to purchase The Doors' excellent box set, which has even more unearthed gems.

Free Music Review: Jim's back!
Hit: 4 Stars

I would have given this 4 1/2 stars if it was possible. I found a lot of the material on here very interesting to listen to. Not everything on here was worth 5 stars, or even 4 stars, but there's enough to hold a Doors'/Morrison fan's interest. My wife's father heard me playing it on my stereo (he's a Doors' fan from way back), and he wanted to know what it was because he'd never heard it before. I let him borrow the CD, and he thought it was the best Doors' release he'd ever listened to (that's a matter of opinion). However, it's interesting to listen to if you're a die hard Doors' fan.
