I have been a fan of the Doors for years, but since I've heard the 2007 Remaster-it's like it's all new again!
The previous recordings (including the 1985 2-CD Set) were lacking in balance and had no low frequency (bottom end). Now you can hear separation and definition in all the instrumental tracks...bass guitar is "meaty" and bass drum and lower end tom-toms have suddenly appeared. Low frequency synthesizer is "juicy" and gives the band more of the intended late 60's organ/leslie sound that makes them so unique. Take a listen to "The Wasp" and you'll hear what I mean. Proper balance has been established..not only allowing the instrumental tracks to be heard for the first time, but the vocals no longer have a stark quality to them. Sometimes the vocals would be loud to the point of annoying in the past-much like a rock band member whose ego was matched only by the volume of his amplifier, if you will..
I would describe the older recordings as a two-track recording; one track for the band...and the other track for Jim Morrison...usually overpowering the rest of the band.
As for the song choices..I would say Bravo! Of course, you can't please everyone, but the collection is definitely a comprehensive one.
Kudos to the sound engineer(s) that remastered these songs! The have been restored to an eloquence never before realized.
Even if you own a "Greatest Hits" already...just give it away and get this one....You won't be disappointed.
