Free Music Review: Leaping Lizard!
Hit: 5 Stars

Even though I read the reviews on this site beforehand, still I was surprised by the cleanness and clarity of the sound on this remixed CD. The drumming jumps right out at you. It is superb. All guitar and keyboard sounds are easily audible and distinguishable, just as they should be. Jim's voice - ahhh, you can hear every poetic scream, grunt, moan and croon. So, you could say that I am totally satisfied with the sound. And, totally convinced that this was one of few bands in which every member was supremely gifted.

"Waiting For The Sun" happens to be one of my two favorite Doors albums, along with "Strange Days", and it's hard to talk about one without mentioning the other. "Strange Days" lured us out of the Summer of Love with mystery, dark sensuality and hallucinatory suggestion; and the last track, the epic "When The Music's Over", pointed the way to the next phase. So then, "Waiting For The Sun" catapulted us without mercy into the chaotic hell that was 1968. Many of the songs - chiefly "Not To Touch The Earth", "Unknown Soldier", "Five To One" and even "Spanish Caravan" - depict with violent or despairing lyrics and/or musical ferocity and dissonance a world going mad, which just about sums up 1968 and the years immediately following. Of course, there are other, quieter themes too. We revisit Venice Beach in "Hello, I Love you", and Pamela's house on "Love Street", both excellent tracks. But things go downhill from there. In "Summer's Almost Gone", the singer is uncertain "...where will we be when the summer's gone?" The answer comes in "Wintertime Love", where it is so cold that only his love can keep him warm. In "My Wild Love", his woman goes riding everywhere, only to encounter the devil and other hostile situations. In "We Could Be So Good Together", the singer promises his love that he will tell her only "wicked lies". And in the gentle "Yes, The River Knows", all we can look forward to is to "...breathe underwater till the end." Not much hope for the world in these songs.

Now - the bonus tracks. "Adagio in G Minor" sounds familiar to me, probably from old films. It's not normal Doors material, but beautiful nonetheless. What we get on the bonus "Not To Touch The Earth" tracks are humorous studio chatter plus 2 alternate versions of the song. The finished track is one of my favorites on the album, but these 2 alternates serve to give us a glimpse into the Doors' creative process, as well as showing how any deviation can change an overall finished track greatly. The tracks are rather stripped down, almost like demos. They are somewhat quieter than the "real" version, with Jim using different inflections on the vocals and sometimes almost whispering.

And finally, we come to "Celebration Of The Lizard". Like other reviewers, I wondered for years what this would be. It clocks in at just over 17 minutes, and we hear Jim reciting his poetry of darkness and insanity over what seems to be improvised, or at least loosely planned, music. And we are given yet another version of "Not To Touch The Earth", actually a major part of the work. I doubt that I will want to listen to this long piece every time I hear the album, but still, it is interesting and for me a missing part of The Doors' repertoire, so I'm happy to have it.

All in all, a masterful collection. Hey, can I help it if, like Jim, I am attracted to anarchy and despair?

Waiting for the Sun Poster

1968's WAITING FOR THE SUN, the Doors' first chart-topper, delivered the #1 signature smash "Hello, I Love You" and the Top 40 hit "The Unknown Soldier." New liner notes penned by Paul Williams. Five bonus tracks include the 17-minute epic "Celebration Of The Lizard" and three previously unissued versions of "Not To Touch The Earth."
