My problem with Doves is that they don't say much as a whisper but when they get into the studio to record an album they are as loud of rebels as you can find. It's not always in your demeanor that conveys the message of how exceptional you are in your craft, and Doves delivers that consistent message on every album they have recorded on. The approach is always the same. Andy will be banging on the drums, Jez will be plucking his strings, and Jimi will be giving his slow crooning with his reversed right handed rhythm guitar for the grooves. Lets not forget Michael pulling out some foreign eerie element hovering between the layers of sound.
Doves don't write a song but they construct a song. They like picking a component for a song then add another abstract module layer and continue to string pieces together into a song ,so when you replay their songs you hear something different than what you heard from the last time you played. Doves music has constantly been referenced to as sonic, giving it to that they seem to reach a certain pitch or point that's heard on each track. This album does the same achieving this at different levels on each song.
"Jetstream" the hauntingly cold vocals by Jez with the railroad train shuffling sound along with the throwback of club origins, gives a earful of sounds for a welcomed introduction. Its such a song you don't know if it was made for you to dance or if it was just made for you to listen."Kingdom of Rust" the titled track makes you want to walk back into the old wild west and to hear the story of our partner Jimi has to tell us. The whirlpool of driving rhythms in the "House of Mirrors" makes you feel your been placed in a straight jacket at an insane asylum wanting to leave, but oddly enough your wanting to stay around at the same time. Doves interestedly noted that this track was analog recorded which contributes to the areas of the song which bleeds through the notes.
I consider this one of their most complete albums from Doves since their debut album, which Doves fan will cry blasphemy, its not that their previous efforts are devalued, but all these tracks held the theme of the album in its entirety.A solid album once again from the Manchester mates, who are worthy to bestow a throne of any musical kingdom, more so than any Kingdom of Rust.
