Free Music Notes for Down From the Mountain: Live Concert Performances by the Artists & Musicians of O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Free Music Review: A beautiful addition to the movie soundtrack
Hit: 5 Stars

Everybody knows the "O Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack. This is not it, but almost as special, as several contributors to T-Bone Burnett's masterpiece gather together at a concert after the movie's release to celebrate the success of their original work. The soundtrack had a strict adherence to a single objective: providing a backdrop for the movie characters' odyssey. From the plaintive, to the meditative, to the humorous, every song on that album is intimately tied to the happenings on the screen. This concert recording is a different affair: from the light and cheery "Sandy Land" to narrative pieces like "John Law Burned Down the Liquor Sto'", the listener gets a better glimpse of the breadth and versatility of the amazing series of artists that Burnett lined up for the project. In the process, it provides another excellent tribute to popular American music.

Free Music Review: Lightning CAN Strike Twice in the Same Place!
Hit: 5 Stars

An earlier reviewer stated that "if country music was this good all the time, I could easily be converted." He's making the same assumption that many people make. And that is the mistaken belief that what country radio plays is country music. With the exception of Alison Kraus (and Emmylou Harris twenty years ago!), these artists aren't heard on mainstream country radio. What you hear on this disc is country music that goes back to its roots and these artists have been playing it for years--for decades in many cases.

If it takes a quirky film like "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" to remind people what country music is really all about, then God bless the Coen Brothers. Now stop reading this and start using amazon.com's music search and find these artists' albums and support some "real" country artists. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Free Music Review: The people still prefer the traditional music.
Hit: 5 Stars

Just when the music establishment thought they knew what music the people wanted an loved;they were taken by surprised by "O Brother,Where Art Thou?".It enjoyed a success of its own,and without receiving any airplay;pop stations considered the music too country and country stations stations also considered it too country. The people themselves discovered it, and it became a gold record, and even went platinum.
The performers from the movie was gathered together again On May 24,2000 at the Ryman Auditorium and entertained the audience with this wonderful music and as a result we now have this excellent collection of Traditional American Music.
If this proves anything ;it is that the musicians themselves know better than the industry establishment, what the people want and love.

Stumbled upon a track by the Fairfield Four, searched for more by them, found this treasure instead . . .

With an amazing array of TALENT who pour ALL of it into their performances, you get an amazing array of styles and musical genres that left ME wishing I could have been there to hear it in person !

Now I have the DVD of the concert, the audio disk of the same, and still have yet to see the movie . . . and am enjoying it all very much !

If you appreciate melody, harmony, great lyrical phrasing, and songs with a simple message behind them, don't miss out . . . get your ears wrapped around this music !

Free Music Review: The music does the talking.
Hit: 5 Stars

This is not a flashy concert, but it is good music. It gives a backstage, insight into the entertainers, and makes us feel we are right there with them. But, the music is the best. Crystal clear, tight harmony of Allison Krause, Gillian Welch, and Emmylou Harris, and tighter harmony of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, are memorable standouts. Allison Krause brings a special quality to everything she sings. Other favorites are the Cox Family singing two songs, and the late John Hartford singing Big Rock Candy Mountain. If you enjoy live performances, and true soulful music performed superbly, this video and also the CD should be added to your collection.
