Free Music Review: Part of my Christmas Tradition

I don't remember how or where I bought this CD, but I have owned it since its release in 1989 and it has become a permanent part of my Christmas. I have a huge stack of Christmas CDs, but "Dr. Demento Presents the Greatest Christmas Novelty CD of All Time" is the one that probably gets the most play time. If I ever lost it or it got broken, I would buy a new copy immediately.
Why? Because it is fun. And Christmas is all about fun. Dr. Demento chose well when selecting from the mountains of Christmas novelty songs available, and picked the proven winners that can be played over and over again. Even the ridiculous Singing Dogs. I wouldn't want to listen to a whole album of them, but for one song they work just fine.
Almost every song on here debuted long before I was born, and the only one I personally remember getting any airplay is "Grandma Got Run over by a Reindeer." The nostalgia factor never comes into play, as these songs are true timeless Christmas classics. One of my favorites, "I Yust Go Nuts at Christmas," is from a comedian I have never heard of but the song perfectly captures my feelings about the crazy Christmas time.
The songs range from the silly ("I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas") to the subversive (Stan Freberg's audio theater piece "Green Chri$Tma$" was considered such a scathing piece of anti-consumerism it didn't actually get airplay until 1983, 25 years after it was written.) Cheech and Chong do their own take on the Santa Claus legend, and Bob and Doug McKenzie give us a Canadian Christmas.
I have seen some reviews talking about the "risqué" nature of some of the songs and being inappropriate for children, but frankly I don't know what they are talking about. The only song even slightly approaching "risqué" is "I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus" about a man and his wife who is dressed in a Santa costume. Personally, I think you would have to be quite the over-protective parent to worry about that song. I grew up on it, and would have no problem playing it for my kids at any age.
Also, the song "Nuttin' for Christmas" has been recorded by numerous artists all putting their own spin on it, from a jazzy/sexy bad girl version to actual kids singing. This version is Stan Freberg's, and adds an extra character of a robber giving the whole song another twist.

The title might be immodest, but it's accurate. Just about every holiday song parody and comedy sketch you can imagine is jimmied onto this hilarious, sprawling collection. While you'll find a smattering of well-known Christmas wackiness (including "Grandma Got Run over by a Reindeer" and the Singing Dogs' "Jingle Bells"), the Doctor's specialty is unearthing the obscure, such as Wild Man Fischer's weirder-than-weird "I Am a Christmas Tree." You'll never listen to "The 12 Days of Christmas" quite the same way after hearing the spins put on the tale by both Allan Sherman and Bob and Doug McKenzie, and you're likely to check your Christmas cookie for "special ingredients" after hearing Cheech & Chong's "Santa Claus and His Old Lady." --David SpragueMiscellaneous Music CDs
