Free Music Review: Timeless...one of hip hop's definitive albums
Hit: 5 Stars

"The Chronic" is the most influential rap album of the 90s, and possibly west coast hip hop's definitive statement. After the breakup of California's pioneering rappers NWA, Andre Young went solo with this masterpiece, a truly original and creative piece of hip hop that would be tirelessly imitated but never duplicated for more than a decade. With this album Dre revolutionized the aging hardcore west coast rap scene with a new music style called g-funk, which consists of slow, heavy rolling basslines, whiny and woozy synths, and samples often from P-Funk or Zapp records. Before this, gangsta rap albums in general were just musically much more uninteresting. These beats are amazing, and countless acts would try to reproduce Dre's Chronic g-funk for years, giving birth to a whole new musical scene. Lyrically this album is entertaining, Dre raps of street and gang life in his hometown of Compton, Los Angeles, often dealing with sex, drugs, and violence in what would soon become the standard for a gangsta rap album. But what I love is that lyrically this album is such a group effort. Dre is surrounded on the mic by an awesome crew of largely Long Beach MCs that appear on almost every track, including Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Daz Dillinger, Lady of Rage, and RBX. These rappers were big players in the g-funk revolution, and it all began on this album. Rap purists might argue that the west coast explosion that followed this album watered down hip hop for a long time, but regardless of what you think of the effects, "The Chronic" is a timeless piece of pioneering, revolutionizing and definitive rap.

The album begins with a good intro which gives way to "F Wit Dre Day (And Everybody's Celebratin')" which may be my favorite song on the album. The beat is awesome, a bass-heavy, thumping production with an awesome whiny synth. Dre and Snoop Dogg spit angry, threatening lyrics and diss rappers Eazy-E and Tim Dog. After this comes "Let Me Ride," which is a perfect track for doing just that, with a great chorus sung by a female singer (this would become the standard in g-funk) and a great, rolling beat with laidback lyrics. "The Day the Ns" took over is a collaboration that speaks of an almost apocalyptic, crazed story. If "The Chronic" is the definitive g-funk album, then "Nuthin' But a `G' Thang" is the definitive g-funk song. This song inspired generations, it's beautiful and laidback. You could get lost in this awesome beat, and the chorus will probably have you singing along, this song is a true classic. "Deeez Nuuuts" has another awesome beat with profane and angry lyrics. Snoop Dogg steals the show on "Lil' Ghetto Boy," which has a flute in the production, and the hardcore "A N... Witta Gun" hits hard. "Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat" is grittier than most of this album's songs, and "Lyrical Gangbang" is a west coast posse cut featuring Dre's team of Long Beach proteges. "High Powered" and "Stranded on Death Row" are more standard Dre cuts, and the outro and bonus track end the album in classic fashion.

Any hip hop collection needs "The Chronic," and I highly recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in rap. It's perfect to play at anytime, in the car especially. The beats are perfect bumping material and the raps are good. This album is the archetypical west coast album, gangsta rap album, and g-funk album, and it's a joy to listen to besides.

The Chronic Poster

Death Row Records. Digitally remastered and repackaged in jewel box in slipcase. Enhanced portion features the classic video Dre Day. 2001 reissue.
1989's Straight Outta Compton, by Dre's previous outfit N.W.A., may have shined the public spotlight on the genre, but The Chronic legitimized it. That is not to say that Snoop Doggy Dogg (The Chronic marks his debut) and Dre's raps are for everyone; the subject matter is the sex, drugs, violence, and politics of South Central Los Angeles, and the phrasing is explicit, to say the least. But The Chronic's real genius is the music. By breeding hip-hop, jazz (studio instrumentation includes saxophones and flutes), funk, and soul (sampled artists include Parliament, Donny Hathaway, and Isaac Hayes), Dre creates downright intoxicating grooves. If you can't feel The Chronic pulsating through your veins, maybe your heart's not pumping. --Bill Crandall
