Free Music Review: The most overrated progresive rock band

I am a huge fan of progresive rock if you're talking late 60s, early 70s with bands like Yes, Genesis, Van Der Graaf Generator, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, ELP and Gentle Giant but this stuff is just embarrasing. I wasn't real familiar with later progresive rock meaning, late 80s, and I knew some people who liked Dream Theater so I decided to give them a try. I got their first 3 albums and I listened to them and listened to them and listened to them til I realized I couldn't stand them. These guys are so ridiculous. It seems that since they are sucj excellent musicians they focus way too much time on showing off on their instruments. And some of their changes in the music make absolutley no sense. Their is endless soloing, and playing guitar, bass, keybaords or drums faster just to show off how technicaly good they are. This is the same reason why I hate Yngvie Malsteem. This is supposed to be Dream Theater's best album but it just sounds like a bunch of endless noodling and metal riffs to me. I just can't get into this band or see whats so great about them. The first album, When Dream And Day Unite, sounds like a cheesy hair band album. As for me being a prog rock conasuer I'll just stick to the classics that I listed above. For bands like Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree to me is technical garbage.

They do it by never allowing technical flash to overwhelm their songs; there's substance under the style, in the form of ear-catching riffs and aggressive rhythms. The opening "Pull Me Under" is, quite simply, a great song, from its sparse introduction to its heavy-duty main riff to its memorable lyrics. Dream Theater, as its name implies, is an introspective band, exploring the complexities of the human heart and bringing them to life with songs like "Learning to Live," "Take the Time," and "Wait for Sleep". Unlike many metal bands, they favor an optimistic outlook, as with "Another Day" and "Surrounded," and even the dazzlingly complex "Metropolis, Pt. 1" is an entertaining listen. -- Genevieve Williams
