Free Music Notes for Live at Budokan (Mcup)Free Music Review: Sucessful tour for a failure of an album Hit: 5 Stars
Live at Budoken is one hell of an album that was released by dream theater. They did not go beyond the three CD set as they did for the other live albums that they have released (ie One CD, then Double live, LSFNY (3 CD)) I was hoping this would be 4 but I guess this would be suffice. Now to analyze why I gave this show a 5 star even though their latest album (which they were basing there tour off of) was horrible.
Let's get a spin off of the first CD that DT offers to the consumers shall we?
The show starts off with the first song from their latest album (ToT) "As I Am" and the way that it starts off with the whole crowd jumping up and cheering their asses off while they begin with this was just amazing to me. Then it went to "This Dying Soul" which I thought would let me down. But instead it got me grinning and almost laughing when it was time to rap in a growl like voice. LaBrie did not disappoint as at first the group was being covered but soon LaBrie took over. Then the part where LaBrie wails the last rap lines just got me nothing but satisfaction.
The third song "Beyond this life" was one of the highlights for me as it took me by surprise. What they played was a slight mixtures of the climatic parts of their only concept album Scenes. It was absolutely wonderful as they pulled it off without it being a horrible addition to this show.
The fourth song "Hollow years" ...waay too sexy, too much emotion, and to top it off Petrucci plays his trademark that makes him what he is as a guitar player and the guitarist of dream theater and that is, having soul and melody within the band. It is impossible to justify what could be said about this song. It was probably the best song that they played (and people criticized FII for no reason!) I just love hearing this song over and over, and best of all it's live!
The fifth/sixth song comes from their album Inner Turbelance and whew...the transition between each song and the whole song itself is perfect. "The war inside of my head! Is raging on!" to TTTSTA man...
The second disk is from Endless Sacrifice to Only a matter of time. Personally this cd has only one flaw (imo) but lets see why.
Endless Sacrifice starts it off and everything is played the way that it was on the album...MINUS some extra parts that Rudess decides to fool around with.
INSTRUMEDLEY! This is the highlight of the second cd and they come off without any warning. You have no clue what they are going to play so DT forces the listeners to pay attention to when they start to transition and to what song they do to. These are probably what the songs do transition to.
Instrumedley:
-The Dance of Eternity
-Metropolis Part 1
-Erotomania
-The Dance of Eternity (A chunk of the middle)
-Metropolis Part 1 (almost impossible to tell when they transit)
-The Darkest of Winters
-Ytsejam
-The Dance of Eternity (another chunk)
-Paradigm Shift (!!!)
-Universal Mind
-The Dance of Eternity (close to the final part)
-Hell's Kitchen (One hell of a finish XD)
Dream theater does not allow any of their fans to take a rest from this intense instrumental song and instead they go right into another intense song..."Trail of Tear!" Man oh man...filled with emotion and it's right after Hell's kitchen (I was hoping they would do Lines in the Sand but can't hope for everything). Another song from FII and you can't help but get moved by the song or at least lip sync it and pretend that you are right their with the other fans in Budoken!
Afterwards "New Millenium" is played and you can just hear the crowd roar with excitement since they want some more blood. Wise choice since it somehow seems to compliment each other and LaBrie does not seem at all tired from his vocal abuse.
The keyboard solo was a slight problem to me as I did not seem to enjoy it as much. Rudess just seems to use a guitar like keyboard effect while shredding like crazy in the beginning. To me I really enjoyed his solo in LSFNY since it was mixed with classic + a little taste of his best solo album (Feeding the Wheel).
"Only a matter of time"...a song from DT's first album which is sung by LaBrie is just too great. He actually inserts emotions and the right amount of power just to make the song interesting and grab a hold of me.
The third disk...the final moments before the dreadful curtain closing time for DT to end. But they don't go off stage without a big bang (or at least something that makes you leave with no regrets).
Starting off is "Goodnight Kiss" which leads with intense playing with one's emotion. I really did not expect LaBrie to just come off and start singing this song in the tone and volume that he did. It was almost too good to believe then the transition to "Solitary Shell"...please just hear the album to actually understand what I am trying to say.
Stream Of Consiousness was not much of a disappoint but I was a little disappointed from the lack of variety within this particular song that they did live. I mean I understand that they might have rushed this song for production but on a live show they could have done better. Can't complain though, all the speed tickets that were broken for this song was broken again at live. It was played just like the album.
Disappear made me want to disappear and just sleep. Another emotional song that did not allow people to prepare for the next song which was...
PULL ME UNDER! Whats to say about this song? Nothing really...just a nice way of saying to people "It's gonna be over but we're gonna remind you that we're playing this song still"
Finally "In the Name of God" is the final track to this album which is also the final track to the album ToT. Amazing amazing amazing, I just love how they finished it. You can also hear them coming out and the crowd giving them a huge ovation.
Plus side is that LaBrie sang perfectly without any cracks. Another plus is that the backup vocals did NOT suck this time (FINALLY!). You can also hear the bass which was sweet to me since I always thought that Myung wasn't being heard in most of the albums. Kuku...aquire this album unless of course you'd rather spend it on some other live junk -.-
Live at Budokan (Mcup) PosterRenowned worldwide for their innovative metal/progressive rock and masterful musicianship, Dream Theater first rose to major fame in the '90s with such hits as "Pull Me Under"- an MTV breakthrough-"Another Day," and "Lie." Their legendary stage prowess and intensely dramatic, high-energy live shows have further built a passionately loyal global fan-base. The sonic punch of this stellar concert from Tokyo's acclaimed Budokan arena-recorded during their 2004 World Tour-proves why.
