Free Music Notes for Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory

Free Music Review: A Masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

This is definately the greatest modern prog-metal album ever released. I bought this album at the wrong time of my life though, and my experience with this album definately reflects the accessibility of Dream Theater's epic masterpiece.

I bought this album about five years ago based on an article in a Guitar World issue that acclaimed Dream Theater's 'Metropolis' to be the ultimate heavy guitarist's wet dream. While Petrucci's work here is absolutely his best, there is so many different themes and contrasting focus that I was immediately turned off of this album. Too much to think about I guess. Since then I have become very aquainted with the world of unconventional and challenging music, and therefore in love with 'Metropolis'.

What we have here is an epic concept album focusing on the story of a murder...('Operation: Mindcrime' anyone?) that is presented in an amazing whirlwind of mad genius. Every member of 'the Orchestra', as they refer to themselves, are in top notch form, executing a truly breathtaking preformance. This album captivates the true Dream Theater sound, in my opinion. The themes are all over the map in 'Metropolis'. From ragtime to classical to pure shredding metal, Dream Theater are truly are masters of all things musical.

'Metropolis' is the ultimate sonic journey. All instrumentation is pitch-perfect, and this album obtains a level of epic grandeur that no other album I have ever heard can possibly match. Dream Theater have never, and will never release anything to top this masterpiece. Written by gods, and preformed by techincal madmen, 'Metropolis' should be the first album that anyone searching for the ultimate musical challenge should purchase. Fair warning should be offered on the other hand, this music will not be appreciated by anyone unprepared to think.

Free Music Review: Dream Theater - One Of The Best Progressive Rock Albums Of All Time
Hit: 5 Stars

Simply put, I love this album. I am a sucker for a good concept album anyway and for me this is the disc where Dream Theater really put it all together to create the best work of their career so far. The album is actually a continuation of the story first told in the track "Metropolis" from the "Images And Words" album 7 years earlier. The story is fleshed out into a murder mystery that is told (and subsequently solved) through the main characters hypnotic regression of a former life. The tale even has a M. Night Shamlyan like twist at the end. It is one of the best thought out musical conceptual pieces I have ever heard. It runs like a Broadway play only with Dream Theater's incredibly diverse and intense prog metal maniacal music, lyrics and vocals, it does not sound like anything you have ever heard in the theater. It is really difficult for me to pick out highlights on this disc as I literally love every track. The music all runs together and shines throughout. You want technically brilliant instrumental interplay? "The Dance Of Eternity" will blow you away. You want outstanding use of vocal dynamics? ""The Spirit Carries On" is one of James Labrie's all time shining moments. You want great lyrics? Pretty much the whole album listens like a good book. It's all here, as Dream Theater put it all together. One thing that must be noted is the addition of former Dixie Dreg member Jordan Rudess on keyboards. Dream Theater had previously been the home of two very talented keyboard players in Kevin Moore, and Derek Sherinian. It is hard to believe, but Rudess is even better then those two guys or at least his style appears to be the perfect fit with the band. As I have already mentioned I think this is Dream Theater's strongest album to date (Feb 2007 as I write this), and is honestly one of my favorite progressive rock albums of all time. If you like your prog with storyline, and plenty of bombast or if you have ever wanted to explore just what Dream Theater do, pick this album up.

Free Music Review: Phenomenal concept album by Dream Theater
Hit: 5 Stars

I've listened to this album about a dozen times now, and each time is more rewarding than the time before. Metropolis Part 2:Scenes from a Memory is a concept album built on the story of Nicholas who has lived a past life as Victoria, a girl who was murdered by her jealous lover. Thematically, all the songs blend well into the story and the musicianship is phenomenal. I'd highly recommend this album to all DT fans and anyone curious about what DT is like. You will be impressed.

Hit: 5 Stars

I absolutely love this album. What more could you want than a Unique, yet powerful singer, a bassist that could give Victor Wooten a run for his money, a keyboardist, you can literally make those keys go as fast as the guitarist, John Petrucci, who is hands down in the TOP 10 best guitarits' living, and in my opinion, with out a doubt, the best drummer in the world standing . . Mike Portnoy. All extremely talented musicians that most if im not not mistaken graduated from frickin Berklee, in Massachusetts, which means you have to be as good as God himself to even be accepted. Every song has awesome meaning to it, and the musicians REALLY show themselves worthy in this mesmorizing, depth of an album. Thank you Dream Theater for always having a "new beat" in every song/album. You all have proven to be arguably the best musicians to have ever lived . . And for all of you who disagree with that statement, just ask youself truthfully if you ever could do HALF of what they have to do. .

Free Music Review: A Masterpiece, pure and simple
Hit: 5 Stars

In my opinion, this is the definitive Dream Theater album, encompassing all the styles that is familiar to the band. It's fast and aggressive in some moments, balanced and melodic for many more, and slow and sweet in between.

Yes, there is soloing, but it fits in the music. The solos are a journey beyound the riffs of the songs and they bring a level of depth and complexity that enhances the music itself.

And speaking of the music, I hadn't heard anything this intelligent since Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and I mean all four movements. The idea that they introduce the main themes in the Overture track and even reprise the opening piece in "The Spirit Carries On" is genius, not to mention all the riffs and themes that are reprised from the song "Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper". And the fact that the whole album is centered around the key of D--not unlike, say, a classical symphonic work or a Mozartean opera--implies that this album isn't to be heard one song at a time. Hearing it from beginning to end at least twice is a rewarding experience that is hard to repeat (except maybe hearing it a third and fourth time).

And finally, this album has made many people fans of the band. People who, before hearing this, would cite Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, and Heaven 17 as their favorite bands. I've also made a believer of my roommate who's a fan of Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Social Distortion.
