Free Music Review: 20th Flawless Anniversary Live Album
Hit: 5 Stars

To write a review for any DT album is a very difficult task to me, because in my opinion Dream Theater is the best band I've ever heard, simply the best and therefore sometimes I feel I could not be very objective on my opinions because I really love this band.

Every album is the best but never better than the other ones they realeased that could not happen `cause they are very different one from the other, so it happens with every live album they released now SCORE is the 5th live album by DT and to be honest when I read the track list I was a little bit sceptical but inside of me I truly believ I was going to like this album so I wait fo its realease, now I been listening to Score for over a month and I still have no word to describe this masterpiece.

Let me start by saying that on March 06 Dream Theater performed at the National Auditorium in Mexico and believe me is the best concert I have ever attend to (includind the other Mexico's performances), I was at 1st row and I could feel the music as I have never before it was the perfect concert and to me it could never be repeated, just the best day of my life and for that reason I really wanted a Live album of this tour, I really believed they played pefectly and James sang as he has never befored... flawless, believe me it was so perfect that even my wife (who is not a DT fan as myself) was banging with their music, it was mindblowing simply perfect, the track list, the mood, their attitude, their performance everything was over the top and for that reason when I read the track list of Score I was a little bit dissappointed, because to me the Mexico's track list was perfect so I wanted to be repeated on the Score album... that doesn't happen not even close and today I love this set list because in Score you can hear (and see) how DT has evolved through the last 20 years...

Something that for me was perfect is that they don't include for the 1st time a Pull me under version, it's not that I don't love this song I really do, but it appears on every DT live album, so now it is a perfect change; the combination of songs is one of the best of all the live albums, and let me tell you the preveously unreleased songs are becoming favorites to me, Another Won, Afterlife, Raise the Knife is so great, is really unblelievable they did't realeased this song yet..

Th perfomances are as usual impressive but I am going to concentrate on James's voice, it was unbelievable, in Mexico he sang flawlessly and believe me one of his best nights but in Score he was even impressive, I believe he is singing as never before, in my opinion he sounds better than in studio if you really apreciate the way he sangs then you're gonna love this album, about Jordan, John, Mike & John Petrucci what can I said that hasn't been said before, they are simply geniuses and in Score theY prove it again

The Orchestra part... well what can I said when I first read that on April they will play with an orchestra I was so excited I knew already it will be so breathtaking an yes it was so nicely blended it seems like those songs were composed to be played with orchestra it was really beautiful but the important things was that every song was even more powerful than the studio version so they were arranged mastefully.

In Score you will find songs that weren't released or it would be very difficult to have such as Innocence faded, Another won, Afterlife & Six degrees on its enterity and believe it worth the time for them to be relesead they sound incredible.

My top 5 of this album would be:

1. Octavarium (the petrucci's solo an the end worths the whole album the live and studio ones)
2. Raise the Knife (One of my DT favorites at this moment)
3. Six degrees (The end is so impressive)
4. Sacified Sons
5. Root of all Evil, Metropolis, The Spirit carries on, AfterLife (so difficult to chose only 5¡¡¡¡¡)

Again its hard to tell if this is the best DT live album I really have mixed feelings about this but afet a month of listening everyday in my IPOD, in my car, in my house and on my PC I think that yes this si simply the best live album, not because the tracklist or the band performance (which is flawless on every album, except for James who sound tired on some songs on the other albums) or the orchestra, simply because for the first time you can hear James singing perfect, flawless and that gives the extra point to make SCORE the best live album on DT's careers.... Obviously I am waiting for the next albums to come..

Once again DT gave us a masterpiece Score is so great, if you like DT go and buy this album it worths every penny you pay for, it is a 10 STARS ALBUM.. what a way to celebrate¡¡¡¡¡

Free Music Review: Absolutely Stunning...DT's best live album yet
Hit: 5 Stars

Score is Dream Theater's 5th live album (the others being, in order, Live at the Marquee, Once in a LIVETime, Live Scenes From New York, and Live at Budokan). Score is the 20th anniversary concert and the closing concert of their 2005-2006 Octavarium World Tour. And it is stunning!
First, the band, as always, is in peak form, but the real revelation is James LaBrie and his voice. For the first time since late 1994, he is completely healed from his vocal cord rupture and is in perfect form throughout the 3 hours of this diverse, grueling, and amazing performance. His voice is truly another instrument in Dream Theater, one he handles just as virtuoustically as the 4 instrumentalists. Speaking of them, they are just staggering in their talent and cohesion. Now, on to the set list....amazing! After the opening two songs from Octavarium, the band plays a song from each album, chronilogically, to close out the first set. Included is Another Won, from their Majesty Demos cassette in 1986 and the first song they ever wrote together, Afterlife, an obscure number from their first album, Under a Glass Moon and Innocence Faded (both sound AWESOME and are rarely played live), Raise the Knife, an unreleased studio cut from the Falling Into Infinity sessions that is sensational, and an epic 10 minute version of The Spirit Carries On that has to be the best one they've ever done.

The second set is the real treat, however....done with an orchestra! They play the ENTIRE 42 minute song Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, which is jaw-dropping, and close out the set with a 28 minute version of Octavarium that is simply mindblowing. Vacant, Sacrificed Sons, and The Answer Lies Within round out this set, and the encore of Metropolis Pt 1, also done with orchestra, is awesome.

I only have two complaints with this set....one is the sound quality, which is bit muddy from The Root of All Evil until it clears up to perfection around the 3rd song. The other is, while the orchestra is excellet overall, there are serious tuning problems during the overture part of Six Degrees, and the flutist sounds so nervous that she's going to crash at any moment during her solo in the beginning of Octavarium, which is surprising for a professional musician. Otherwise this is a stunning document of a band at the continued peak of their powers...here's to 20 more years of DT!!

Free Music Review: Brought me to tears . . .
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm one of the fortunate 6000 people who attended this show last April. Having been a DT fan for over 15 years and seeing them live seven or eight times (including the Metropolis show in NYC), I've heard most of their music live. Although there were a few songs that I would have liked to hear at this show ("These Walls" especially) this performance was still incredible! I've always been attracted to symphony arrangements in music (going way back to the early 60's) and the addition of rock music into the fold just makes my day. So here you have this absolutely amazing group of musicians with this great group of symphony musicians joining them to produce one hell of a great sound. I was in Heaven! I could hardly control myself after getting the DVD to relive this experience. Well, I gotta tell ya, it had me cheering and yelling several times during the performance! "Sacrificed Sons" brought tears to my eyes during the show and again after watching the DVD. I guess there's something to say for music that can generate that type of emotion. After the conclusion of "Octavarian" I was in tears again! Of course I was a little horse from yelling and out of breath from whistling. All in all it was an exausting concert. I guess if you leave a show feeling like that, the band performed rather well. Ya think? Anyhow, I wopuld highly recommend this cd and dvd for any fan that hasn't seen them this close. The video coverage is actually quite good. I can't be a judge of sound quality. You need to ask someone with a home theater system. Get it . . . watch it . . . love it!

Free Music Review: Blown away
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the first Dream Theater record I ever heard and I couldn't believe how blown away I was with it. I popped the first CD in the car and listened to the first 2 songs and couldn't believe the quality of music so I went back and listened to the first 2 songs again. The same thing happened after I listened to 'Afterlife' (track 4) -- I went back to the beginning and listened to the first 4 songs again. It took about a week before I even got to the second CD.

The second CD is the 41 epic tune, 'six degrees of inner turbulence. A song about, well, the inner turbulence of life. There is a spot around the 15 minute mark where I find it too dissonant, and there is an instrument in the orchestra that is flat, but this is a very weak criticism for a absolute work of art including the fantastic 'solitary shell' and powerful climax.

The find the 3rd CD ok but not anywhere near the first 2. Octivarium takes too long to get going and 'Metropolis' starts out so promising but the wonderful keyboard riff that kicks off the song is drowned out in the dissonance.

The keys are great, the guitar playing is great, the percussion is great and the vocals are out of this world outstanding.

One of the top 3 live albums off all time on my list along with Iron Maiden's "Live after Death" and Rush's "All the Worlds a Stage."

Free Music Review: Dream Theater's Crowning Achievement
Hit: 5 Stars

Score: XOX is, quite simply, the most amazing live album I have ever heard. There must have been some kind of weird magic going on in that concert, because bands simply do not sound this good live, especially hardcore prog-metal bands. This album sounds so good that I've actually wondered if some of it was recorded in the studio with the sounds of an audience dubbed in. It is an amazing testatment to the artistry and talent of prog-metal's flagship band. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is performed in its entirety--at least, the part of that album that deals with mental illness is. Songs like Glass Prison, Misunderstood, and Disappear are left out, and perhaps rightfully so: they don't share the theme of the rest of the album, which is one of people struggling with mental and emotional problems. There are a number of DT tracks from other albums, even a couple that aren't on any DT album that I'm aware of, and I'm pretty sure I have them all! You will be blown away by Raising the Knife and Another One. The orchestra blends well with DT's jamming, although it seems to me there were at least a couple of instruments in the orchestra that had some tuning issues. Most of it sounds great though.

Score: XOX is Dream Theater's crowning achievement. I don't think they'll ever top it, not even with a studio album. Buy it now, thank me later!
