Free Music Notes for Score: 20th Anniversary World Tour - Live With The Octavarium OrchestraFree Music Review: Best so far... Hit: 5 Stars
Can these guys really keep getting better??? I know some people are complaining about the setlist, but it works for me. Spans their careers pretty well, I think. I mean, if I REALLY want to hear all of their old stuff at the same time, I'll listen to an older concert. I really enjoy the live sets, not only for the energy, but for them to achieve their high level of playing while playing together, live, speaks volumes to me about their talent. Plus, (and you know they know this, too), their songs NEVER sound the same twice. I mean, I've got bootlegs of consecutive shows on the same tour, promoting the same material, and they not only play different setlists, but the songs they do play every night NEVER are identical. They have fun with it, mix it up. You gotta love that!
James even sounds better than usual. I think he's mellowing as he ages.
Anyways, I really, really love this show, and if someone has never heard them live before, before I play for them LATM or MLINYC, I'll play this one FOR SURE!
Free Music Review: I have GOT to see these guys live someday... Hit: 5 Stars
Okay, I'll start with the bad stuff. It sounds like one of the violinists in the orchestra is out of tune. And John Petrucci's backing vocals are simply awful; I've yet to hear a live DT recording where he stayed on key. OTOH, I can live with that because it's one of those little things that markes this album as a live recording. The backing vocals aren't coming from a tape, they're coming from actual humans.
But overall, this is a great set. The live Dream Theater is every bit as tight as the same band in the studio. The second and third discs, with the backing of the orchestra, sound great as well, although "Metropolis Pt. 1" sounds a little cluttered in spots. While I could complain that a few of my favorite tracks are not in this set, I won't; how many live versions of "Pull Me Under" or "A Change of Seasons" do they really need to record? ;)
This is definitely a great set, and one of the best live albums I've heard in years.

All I have to say is how thankful I am that I discovered Dream Theater. I didn't discover them until about a year ago, but it has made all the difference in the world. The Octavarium and Score tour displays selections from all of their 8 studio albums and also some tracks that didn't make it to cd. I went and saw them in Philadelphia in March and i was blown away. Being the first time seeing them live, I was literally couldn't stop smiling because of how amazing they actually were. Score has some classic Dream Theater songs but also ones you've never heard before but you will be so thankful that you did. My favorite track on the album right now is Raise the Knife. Seriously, if you do not have this album yet, or you aren't a big fan of Dream Theater, buy this immediately. You won't be disappointed. Musical perfection is its greatest form, even after 20 years. Amazing
Free Music Review: Good live recording but not their best Hit: 5 Stars
Dream Theater have kept fans rockin' with hard crunching guitars, amazing drums and good vocals. This show shows all of that and the softer side of Dream Theater with the added strings. This is a good show but in my opinion live at Budokan is much better. In my opinion the best part of a Dream Theater show is the instrumentals that they have during most of their songs which allow for creative expression during a concert. These get lost in this show due to the orchestra but the songs themselves are done well. If you're looking for a good show from Dream Theater I'd recommend you get Live at Budokan. If you already have it or you're looking for something different from their norm this is a good show for you.
Free Music Review: Finally a great Dream Theater live album! Hit: 5 Stars
Dream Theater is great in the studio. But their live albums all are difficult to take because James Labrie sings consistently flat on ALL of them, which is a very big disappointment. (Want an example - watch the concert videos on the second dic of the Score DVD). I have heard this is because the live albums are recorded toward the end of the tours. Indeed, I saw DT in 2003 on the second night of their tour with Queensryche and LaBrie's voice was top notch.
The vocals sound great here, and the album is very good, as is the DVD. Six Degrees with the orchestra is fantastic. The only possible gripe I could have is that the low end of the orchestra is not adequately captured on either the DVD or CD.
