Free Music Review: Amazing...but
Hit: 4 Stars

I have been a die hard DT fan for years.I have seen a few stops on each tour from 6 degrees up to and including octavarium and I was also at this milestone show. I think the album is amazing, the only problem I have is that one or more of the string players are horribly flat during the entire second set. I noticed it during the show and I hoped that the band would do everything in their power to fix this problem. The most they could do was bring the entire string section down in the mix as soon as the band kicked in after the overture of 6 degrees. Now before people start attacking me, let me say that mistakes I can stand, we all make them. It's part of the live experience...but a flat violin is inexcusable. Instruments being played out of tune are one of the most offensive things to hear in music next to feedback. However, if you forget about that minor flaw, it's the best DT live album to date. After hearing Raise The Knife it makes you wonder why it never made the cut on falling into infinity. It's probably my favorite DT song right now. The setlist is perfect...the mix is perfect...and I can tell you that after being at the show ...that is exactly how the live house mix sounded that night which is very cool. Even though the strings weren't up to par...(and deserve a lesson in tuning their instruments)it didn't take any luster away from that special evening. That's the most important thing, so here's to 20 years of DT and we await 20 more.

So. Mad props to LaBrie on this recording. I don't think he's ever sounded better (save the screaming part toward the end of "Octavarium." that reeks of cheese.). The drumming feels a little muddy, but that's my only gripe, well, that and the song selection wasn't exactly perfect. But I can feel the intensity of the night from the recording! Must have been a magical show to witness.

Highlights include "Innocence Faded" which show LaBrie still has the versatile vocal chops of his youth and "The Spirit Carries On" along with "Metropolis." Also, it's cool to hear and have "Another Won" and "Afterlife" in a live setting. "Vacant" didn't live up to my expectations especially considering it was done with an orchestra. It didn't feel as intimate as the studio release, nor as desolate, which gave the song its power. Of course, "Six Degrees..." and "Octavarium" transfer well to a live setting with an orchestra. Even though I definitely prefer _Live Scenes From New York_ I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the show.

Great job, Dream Theater, this is a stellar live release that could have easily turned boring since it's the third one in five years.

Free Music Review: I loved their music, but...
Hit: 4 Stars

... the live Octavarium Orchestra really killed this album for me (when they were involved). And it hurts to say that, because I am huge fan. There were problems with pitch, maintaining tempo, clear technical challenges that the live orchestra could not pull off without sound like they were trying **really** hard to keep it together. I love that Dream Theater put both SDOIT and Octavarium in their set, but an otherwise solid performance was marred by the orchestra.

Well...maybe.
I don't feel this live album is up to par with all the hype around this show.

Seeing them live (open for Megadeth) thats where I became a fan. I must say they put on a really good show.

In short...the vocals seem a little weak (Like the majority of most live albums, I've gotten bootlegs that are better). And for the price, the unreleased material, it isn't worth it. A live album is supposed to capture the energy of the band.
Sepultura - Under A Gray Pale Sky, Metallica - S&M & Pantera - 101 Proof & Rammstein - Live Aus Berlin; all come to mind. And that is what this album is missing, energy. It lacks energy very much.

I have to agree with another reviewer. This live album is pre-mature.
They have put out 3 studio albums in the last 6 years. Most of that material is on this album. They really should have waited a few more years. So I'm gonna just stick to there studio release for now.

Free Music Review: Same problem
Hit: 2 Stars

After all these years, DT lacks what they've always lacked; (and is what is at the heart of prog music) and that's a sense of counterpoint and harmonic development. It's all chord changes with banal melodies and fast licks. Oh sure, the chops are there. Astounding. But there's no statement. The classic bands (Yes, ELP, Gentle GIant, et al) had chops too (though not to the speed of DT) but they had something more ...SONGS. The intricacies where within the composition. This stuff sonds like one dimensional jams with fancy riffs thrown in along the way. It's barely above DraginForce -- who are a joke, but they too have blistering speed. DT never developed into what I hoped they would. They just do what they've always done, only faster.
