Systematic Chaos - 2-Disc Special Edition

I made sure I got the special edition CD. Well worth the extra loot for this one. Since a billion people already reviewed this one, telling what songs are on there, I'll just give you a quick rundown of what I thought of the songs, being a long-time DT fan.

In The Presence of Enemies - Great intro, great overall song. One of the few ones I can listen to all the way through and enjoy every piece.

Forsaken - Usually skip this song. Has a Zack Wilde meets Megadeth feel to it, but the piano works well overall, balancing out the entire song.

Constant Motion - A great overall song, except for the vocals. James meets Biohazard, just doesn't work at all. And having Portnoy growling doesn't make things better either. Numbing guitar, crippling rhythm, and Petrucci shows us one of the best solos on the album.

The Dark Eternal Night - Hated this song at first because of the Biohazard-like vocals, but the riffs and solos are great. If you like screaming and growls this one's for you.

Repentance - Such a beautiful song! The only other one I can listen to all the way through. Great vocals and lyrics (this is the kind of stuff you should stick to singing, James!), kool rhythm, and awesome keyboarding and guitar work.

Prophets of War - Sorry. No matter how many times I try to listen to it, I can't. It's just too gay! Vocals and keyboards are just not DT material. Would have worked better on a Trixter album, not here.

The Ministry of Lost Souls - Darker lyrics. Slow, slow introduction. The best part picks up around 9:20 and lasts for a few minutes. This instrumental section shows off the reasons to get this album: Petrucci's riffs, Portnoy's beats, and how the whole group just builds and builds, layering solos galore. Then it dies down and it's time to skip to the last song.

In The Presence of Enemies Pt. II - Not a bad intro. Very Pink Floydish. My gripe with this song aren't so much the lyrics as the way James sings them, especially that `Dark Master' part! Sounds so gay and repetitive and just plain awful. That's really the only flaw with this song. I don't mind the fans chanting and shouting at all. As with the last one, around 11 minutes or so, we come into a great build of riffs, rhythms, and DT progression.

Overall a great album. And the bonus DVD is great too. I saw it first and then started listening to the DVD and it gave me a greater appreciation for it, if you can believe that. How it all comes together, and so quickly, so complex.

Free Music Review: Weak.
Hit: 3 Stars

I believe that Dream Theater is one of the premier bands in the history or rock. However, when I compare a new album I have to compare it to the standard. For Dream Theater the Standard are the first three albums up to Awake. First an open memo to Jordan Rudess: Please refrain on using the stupid western piano sound. It is annoying and it sucks. Forsaken is my favorite song of the album because it flows and is heavy.

I was dissapointed that I spent money on this cd. Buy devil's slingshot clinophobia instead.

Free Music Review: Best Album by Best Band Ever
Hit: 5 Stars

This album definently sounds like it has elements from all of DT's previous albums, they just keep getting better and better and better.

Instead of talking about the album as a whole I'll break down each song.

1. In The Presence Of Enemies - a good opener

2. Forsaken - kinda reminds me something from SFM.

3. Constant Motion - first time I hear this song, I though was this Metallica? Awsome song!

4. Dark Eternal Night - The heaviest song DT did to date, And I love it. The begining sounds a little like something TOOL would do.

5. Repentance - I did a double take when I heard the middle of this song, It almost sounded like something that should have been on Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, its good if you listen to this song then immediatelly play Voices it just flows very nicely.

6. Prophets Of War - This is the only song that I hate from the album, it just isn't up to DT's standards.

7. Ministry Of Lost Souls - Definently the awsome, reminds me of stuff from 6DIF with a little bit of SFM mixed in. I actally would play this song and then play Home, another good combo.

8. Presence Of Enemies 2 - This song almost sounds like it could be the Hard Rock version of Phantom of the Opera, actually that is a project I would like to see DT do, I bet LaBrie could pull it off. It also kinda sounds like something Megadeth would do. Then toward the end where it has that nice Snyth spacey riff. I just love it defiently hear the RUSH in this song.

Awsome album. I just love DT, I'm definently gonna spend the $300 and buy the VIP backstage pass for their next Tour, I might even fly out to Austrailia to see their tour they have now.

Free Music Review: VERY SOLID ALBUM! my fav dt album sinse six degrees
Hit: 5 Stars

yes my friends you read correct. this album is defidently dream theater's strongest album sinse six degrees of innner turbulence. it is pretty much a mix of all of DT's best sides. best of their prog, metal, and more calm rock sides all mixed in one. and this is also their best playing sinse six degrees. the emotion from scenes is also brought back at times. jordan really shines on here. and petrucci plays some of his best solos ever! and the new 25 min epic is amazing!

here is a short song by song review,

In the prescense of enemies pt 1 - 5/5 -
amazing opener! Very Progressive track! opens up with a 5 min intromental insanity. sounds like a more heavy edged metropolis pt2! after a emotional transistion james kicks in about 5 mins into the song. after about 4 mins a crazy unisink between petrucci and rudess strats up. than there is a very smooth transistion into the next song.

Forsaken - 4.5/5
forsaken is a great track. its a more straight folward song. but its not like the slower songs on octavarium (witch i thought dragged a bit) this song is more like their classic ballads. just a bit heavyer. very catchy song

Constant Motion - 5/5
i love constant Motion its such a cool heavy progressive song! dream theater's metallica influence can clearly be heard on this song, but it is cool. i love the instromental section on this song. killer petrucci solo!

The Dark Eternal Night - 5/5
this is by far the heavyest song on the album. it has the style of TOT, but its more on the progressive side, and is done much better than TOT. The instromental section is sick! reminds me of dance of eternity! awsome song. one of the best on the album

Rependance - 5/5
a very moody more calm song. really well done vocal's. petrucci plays some tasty stuff on this song! reminds me of opeth's damnation. really cool track

Prophets Of War - 4/5
A good strange song. it is more straight folward than the other songs, and my least favorite from the album, but still a great song!

Ministry Of Lost Souls - 5/5
One of the highlights of the album! a great song with a great story to it. It has a scenes from a memory feel to it. very powerful synth useage. the 14 min epic song starts of very mellow, and eventlly transits into a heavy instromental section wich last quite a few mins. Petrucci plays a great damn Guitar solo! The song eventully transits into the emotional ending. and starts to fade off to john petrucci's amazing emotional catchy guitar line. mikes does some crazy drum fills over it.

In The Presense Of Enemies pt 2 - 5/5
part 2 of the epic is just as amazing as the first part. it starts off where the first left off. The track starts off calm and moody, and more vocal driven. It begins to built up, and it eventully builts to a verry proggy hard rock sound. than the song builts into a really heavy metal section, and the frighting instromental section kicks in for about 5 mins. That transists into the melodies from pt 1 of the song. and that conludes the song.

GREAT ALBUM!
