Free Music Review: CONTROVERSIAL....
Hit: 5 Stars

It's easy to spend the following review telling you how talented, intelligent and special Amanda Palmer is. That goes without saying. I think for a change though we should kick things off with a little controversy. Brian Viglione might be one of the best drummers in popular music. Imaginative and complex. He supports and enriches the following fifty minutes like a full orchestra. If you need further proof do yourself the favour of checking out there live DVD `Paradise' fast forward to Half Jack (Still there most effective song, there `Everlong' if you will.) and watch his frankly AMAZING drum solo over the intro.
That aside what does the album offer. Well, first it's important to say if you're someone who gets intimidated by powerful strong, vulnerable, honest and frankly sexy and twisted women, you'll hate it. If however like me you find the whole idea fresh and exciting its a thrill from beginning to end.
The opener is possibly the most exhilarating on the album. Teasing you from the get go. Twisted lyrics about sexuality and it's nature, mixed with wry practical observation. Palmer has rarely been quite so witty and playful. While at the same time managed to capture the pathos of the issue with laser precision. This is a mere taste of what is to come. Holding back the word `cock' seems a little uncharacteristic of her usually uncompromising sexual bravery. That aside- cant fault possibly DD's most interestingly twisted ditty.
The next track is Backstabber, a furious vitriolic stripping down made all the more powerful due to the sheer elegance of the delivery, and slick crisp production. An unsurprising single.
After that is where we change gear, in many ways the difference on this album is Palmers marriage of whimsy with more weight. Last album contained Coin-Operated Boy, faultless at the time, but YV has the more substantial counterpart in My Alcoholic Friends. A joyous Wiel style sing-a-long.
Delilah, changes gear. About the frustration of being the best friend of someone whose in total control of there life despite the violence she suffers from her lover. Sensitive to all the aspects involved it crescendo's in a plead to help her escape from her abuser.
The next is `First Orgasm' Not ever, but of the day. Which seems to work in the same way as does a little auto erotica. (Clocking up a good four and a half minutes more than I`ll ever manage.) I have to say this is a track I fast forward as often as I listen to. It can come across as a little so-so. The subject has it's amusing points. Good lyrics, but I find the music a little jarring and unattractive.
The next track is possibly my favourite on the album. Mrs O. Haven't a clue what it's really about. Not that it has to be about anything, so given that the lyrics are used as a texture to the overall emotion of the song, it cant be faulted, especially on the refrain `No Hitler and holocaust, no winter and no Santa Clause' secures Palmers place as a performer not afraid to touch controversial subjects. (What? No Saint Nick???!!!)
The album closes with the sublime Sing. A beautiful emotional crescendo. The sentiment might feel a little schmaltzy for fans of Palmers usual uncompromising sarcasm, but proves that under it all Amanda is a fragile, beautiful, artistic soul, looking for a way of just understanding it all. But since where we in any doubt?
This is a taster of the high points of the album, it would be pointless to go track by track, after all the best thing to do is check it out. IF your in, your not getting out. Possibly too camp, too punk, too damn seductive for some tastes but that in itself will be the very reason others will love it. Count me in.
It has more than a little in common with the likes of Regina Spector, and there dynamic nods to a few bands from the 80's underground, though where as you could argue `Begin to Hope' could be looked at as a hopeless sell out, desperate to be in with the Amos crowd. `Yes Virginia' more than makes up the ground in invention. Moving malevolently down the alternative fork in the road, one less travelled but ultimately more rewarding. Faith restored. Bring on the tour.

Yes Virginia (Dig) Poster

Japanese pressing adds 2 bonus tracks ''Lonesome Organist Rapes Page Turner' & 'Two-Headed Boy'. Roadrunner. 2006.
It's hard to resist a singer who fully indulges her sexual obsessions on CD, especially when they involve songs about transsexuals and--to paraphrase a bit--girls who leave out used condoms on their bedroom dressers to make their boyfriends jealous. And that's just Amanda Palmer in her tamer moments. As the mouthpiece for the carnival-like Dresden Dolls, she certainly knows how to scintillate. The Boston cabaret-punk duo's second album is a no-holds-barred affair that sees her singing about Nazi sympathizers ("Mrs. O") and bedroom antics ("First Orgasm") with equal zest, while the music she bangs out with drummer Brian Viglione fits the very definition of perverse. For some, it's the soundtrack to a kabuki-faced nightmare; for others, the stuff of strangely captivating dreams. --Aidin Vaziri
